Superman's Engine Shot
Hi Superman,
In your engine shot (Porsche porn thread), it looks as if your backdated heater hoses don't have any hose clamps on them. Any reason you feel they're not necessary? Also, what is that round thing in the upper left hand corner (the black thing with the yellow end, not the fuel accumulator and filter)? My car ('83 911SC) doesn't have that? Also, did you clean or polish your injector lines? They look awfully clean. Finally, now that you've painted the fan, and from what I can tell the valve covers, would you do it again or leave them "natural"? Thanks.............Andras |

You realize the title to your thread implies something other than a picture of Supe's engine. I read it and thought he had a catastrophic engine failure.

Tom,
Right. Thanks. I don't have the Tempostat, thus I don't have the servo!!!! |

Nice engine bay! Backdating the heating and no AC really frees up a lot of space.

I don't have them on mine either - the paper ones are a b!tch to get on and off - they aren't going anywhere.

Bill,
Look closely at Superman's engine, on the left and right side of the fan, and you will see the black metal air deflectors, attached to the paper/aluminum tubes which supply air to the heat exchangers (HE) (note that the left one is behind the distributor and under the coil, thus hard to see). These are different from your 83 SC. Your left one goes up to the heater motor and fan, then back down to the left HE, whereas your right HE gets its air from the paper/alium. tube running over the top of the fan, from the same blower motor/fan on the left side. This explanation makes sense when you look at Superman's engine and your stock SC in comparison. Thus, the backdate requires two new sheet metal diverters from an earlier 911. They can be ordered from your stealer, or if you have friends in Porsche race shops, they are often lying around, since race engines don't need heat. Hope this helps...............Andras

the left side requires an air outlet from a turbo, and also the turbo metal "up pipe" from the exchanger, if the exchangers are stock. the lower flex hose can't make the turn to attach to the exchanger. SCs have the larger dist cap, which won't clear the earlier outlet.

Looks like you all have it covered. Turbo left metal piece. The hose is going nowhere, like Cam says. I wipe the engine once every few months or so, but it stays clean. The only unanswered question is Would I do it over again? Indeed I would! The heat backdate, the A/C removal and the engine parts powder-coated. Like it a lot.
