Alternator light and starting problems
Here’s the problem:
I have a 1974 911 with an 83 3.0 engine - The alternator light comes on after I start the car and slowly goes dim – sometimes it goes out other times it stays dim. I have also noticed a high pitch whine when running. The headlights go brighter at a higher RPM. Today I checked the voltage from the battery – when idling it was about 12.5 – ran it at 2000 rpm and it was 14-14.5. – Checked the belt (feel pretty tight –maybe ½ of play), alternator light does come on before starting. So I turned off the car and tried to restart it and the starter just spun around (like it’s not engaging) – tried again and starter just spun – third try and the car started. Now it’s reading 15.2. I just had the starter replaced two weeks ago and never had a problem with it until now. Had the battery checked – it has a low charge but it’s fine. Going to check all the grounding straps now. Do I have two issues going on, a bad alternator/regulator and now a starter problem? Or could it all be connected? Just bought the car a month ago so I’m still new to the Porsche thing but I’m getting the crash course (so is my savings account). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sorry if the lingo is not right – still learning it. Thanks |

It does sound like two different problems happening in the same timeframe!
Starter problem sounds like a mistake was made during installation two weeks ago! Maybe loose barrel nut(s) ... or perhaps misaligned during the install. your 15.2 Volt reading is indicative of a faulty Voltage regulator.

Do you think the flywheel teeth could be damaged some how? It ran like a champ for the last few weeks. Hot or cold it fired up on the first twist.
I found receipt for new VR that’s a year old – can they go bad that quick? Thanks |
