Yokohama AVS ES100

Does anybody have any experience with these tires? I'm buying new tires for mostly the street.

Had them on my Carrera - highly recommend. Great tires at a great price. They stuck a lot better than the lamo Kumho Ecstas on my 993.

Have them on my '88 Carrera - still haven't found the limits of adhesion in the wet with them yet.

I also have them on my Boxster. I did a track day last week and I was very impressed with their stickiness. I like them better than the Kumho 712 I had on my 911.

So, everyone who has replied seems to like them, especially for their traction. What about ride comfort? When I bought my '87 it had these tires (pretty new) on 16" BBS wheels. I did not like the look of the wheels, so I bought a set of 17" Cup wheels from my mechanic. These came with Toyo Proxes T1-S tires which, of course, had a lower profile. I originally thought that my ride quality would degrade with the lower profile sidewall tires, but the Toyos actually ride much nicer (smoother and quieter) as compared to the AVS ES100's.

Maybe I'm comparing two very different beasts (regarding quality/price), but after running the Toyos I don't think much of the ES100's. Maybe I'll change my mind in the winter: I haven't experienced the Toyos in wet conditions yet.

The only thing I have to compare the Yokos against were the original Pirellis that came on my Boxster. I haven't noticed that the ride on the Yokos is any harsher than on the Pirellis. I do know that the Yokos wear much better and make far less noise than the Pirellis.

Toyos are R - rated. Much different tire than the Yokos...and about twice as much.

I have them on my 964 and they're quite loud after 5000 miles. I have my camber set at -1.5 so I don't know if that is contributing to the annoying sound. I haven't driven it in the rain so I can't comment on wet conditions. However, I was able to take them at an auto-x. After fooling around with the tire pressure all day, I couldn't get the tires to 'stick'. I guess you can only expect so much for a tire under $100. Would I buy them again?....probably not. Just my $.02.
Any recommendations for a street / track tire?

Just ordered a set from Tirerack today, considering everything, (budget, use, etc.), seems like a good street tire.

Interesting that you didn't like them, Schubee. Seems like approx. 1 in 5 people hate them, and the other 4 rave. Every thread I've read, including Tirerack's review page. Very strange.

doesn't the "R" rating mean that the tires in question are radials? I've had Toyo's on a BMW that was DS'd and my wifes LS 400 and have nothing but good things to say about them. I have also had Toyo snow tires (with walnut shells!!) and they performed well, lasting much longer than Blizzaks with as much ice grip.

I have autocrossed the 944 with them, both wet and dry. Awesome tire in the rain. Earlier this year, in dry conditions, I beat a similar 944 who was on Hoosiers. Obviously, the Yoko's don't stick as well as Hoosiers, so I must have been the better driver that day, but an interesting data point, anyway.

One of the best tires available for 15" wheels.

Denis,

Maybe it's the set up on my car that causing the annoying 'whine'. Aside from the noise, they are great street tires.

cassirot - I misread your post. When you mentioned Toyos, I automatically thought of the Proxy RA-1s, which I've also been looking at. Those tires are R-rated, and quite pricey. I don't know about any other Toyo tires.

My apologies with the confusion.

Yes. Go to tirerack.com , they have tested and compared every tire sold against its competition. The two tires you mention are not direct competitors, however, S-03s are a definite cut above in price and performance. S-03s test better than Yoko AVS sports, so there you have it. Not a fair contest.
