| Author of "101 Projects" | New Server Coming...
I just dropped a whole bunch of $$$ on a new server - should be up and running this BBS in about 2-3 weeks. I realize that you guys can't see it, but anymore people on this BBS and it would be beginning to slow down. This old server is about 2 years old (my how time flies), and is running at 95% CPU capacity during the peak hours. In addition, to protect against hackers, I will be installing some additional firewall software which will require additional CPU power... Just letting you know that you're purchases do come back to the community! -Wayne P.S. 2.8 ghz Xeon, Dual SCSI RAID, 2 GB of memory, etc...

Great! Any chance that this will keep your Sunday mourning backups from slowing down the BBS (EST)? One of my favorite things to do on Sunday mourning is grab my cup of coffee and start reading the BBS. Jason 88 911 CAB

Wayne, I'm curious what sort of firewall software you will be using.

After Bruce Anderson's presentation on 911 engine history at German Autofest I asked Bruce if that was Keynote he used on his Apple iBook to present his slides. Bruce's wife answered "yes" enthusiastically and I ended up talking to her for a while. She is a long time Apple employee. She claims Apple users and Porsche drivers are similar people. They both demand the best driving experience. -Brad

If Apple users are porsche owners and microsoft users are chevy owners what does that make us linux users?

Hey back off with the microsoft comment, just because i like playing up to date computer games doesn't mean i'm a chevy driver. I may not understand my computer enough to argue, but my friend is a programer/network engineer and if he tells me that pc's are far superior to apples in flexable functionality, then i believe him. And i bow before the great one (wayne) for his wonderfull services!

LOL alright, alright.. I like to play my video games too but until halflife 2 comes out I'm not that interested in anything. So maybe microsoft users are backhoe drivers? slow, clunky but very useful and gets the job done?

Linux users would be like either a ferrari driver or maybe a lotus driver. MS is better than Apple in many ways. If all of your stuff was proprietary and there was no outside competition you should guaranty that it runs well. The fact that it runs well no matter who makes the stuff... So far all of the major MS problems that I've seen have stemmed from either faulty hardware or user error. Yes some legacy stuff has problem, but that is with anything. Apple may be stable, but i have had apple users tell me that it's not as rock solid as the apple people try to say. I don't think MS is perfect, but it's the best compromise.

ferrari or lotus sounds much better As much as I don't like microsoft for general applications for the average user I think it's the best comprimise out there, I just prefer linux for stability and configurability.

I've used them all. About every year or two I dip my toes in the MS waters, and get the same thing. Some cool bits in the short term, then after a day or week things start to break, and a work killer in the long term. I'll take my Macs despite their issues. imho they pale in comparison to M$ problems, most notably, the "monoculture" that can cause organizations to grind to a halt. I fully understand why support people love M$...total job security.

I would say your average Linux user knows more about how his/her OS and computer works than the average Mac user. I would also venture to guess the average Pelicanhead knows more about his Porsche and how it works than the average Rolls owner. Rolls->Mac: Looks down on everyone else's choice of ride, but ignores the fact that they don't know a thing about their vehicle Porsche->Linux: A sweet ride, but requires attention to what you're doing. Owners can't figure out why everyone else hasn't seen the light. Ford->MS Windows: sometimes bursts into flames, but hey, there's a huge aftermarket and everyone's driving one.
