Reactors?

I have a new to me used 1977 911S Targa. The engine is a high mileage (170K) well maintained 2.7L I have read on the board that the car should have the Reactors removed. How do I tell if I have reactors or not?Reactors

from what I have read the engine would have been cooked at around 60 or 70 thousand miles if you had reactors. Certainly not running at 170K with original reactorfied motor. Thats what I have read anyway...

Sixty seconds using the search function found this:

In cool climates the cars without A/C but thermal reactor equipped did okay and lasted many miles. Many of the the thermal reactors were removed and replaced with a simple header system which allowed the factory heater box set-up to be continued to be used. Cheers, Jim

Jim, I think you sent us to that thread purely because of the Bong reference...lol... I wonder if the Nickel plated reactor bong ever came to be?

Jim Sims 10-03-2003 04:11 PM

I currently have the "bong" headers on my car (a '76); this winter they are coming off along with the factory heater boxes, muffler and air injection lines. I plan on adding some SSI's and a backdated muffler; at my altitude (7000 ft.) I'll probably pick up 5 to 10 more horsepower.

what is the most milage you have heard on a heat reactor motor? Are my numbers up top way off base?

Jim Sims 10-03-2003 05:24 PM

Jeff, Here's some images of the "headers" sometimes used to replace the thermal reactors:

Those aren't headers. They are called by pass pipes. My 140k all original 2.7 had them until I changed them out for the SSI's. I keep telling myself that it is time for a rebuild but the engine has NO leaks and that's using Mobil 1 for the past three years. Oil consumption is about one quart every 2000 miles.

Of course they are not tuned length headers; note I put quotes around the term "headers". Jim

Thanks for the responses. Now that I know what to look for, my car definately has had them removed.

Thanks

Jeff
