3.6 engine tin woes
I’ve been working nightly for the past two weeks on the 3.6 conversion. The engine cleaned up really nice and I’ve done/doing all the seals/gaskets for preventive maintenance. The only problem has been the engine tin, it was badly rusted on the left side and front pieces.
I bought a full set of used tin from a 3.6 and it is very different from my tin even though it came off the same year engine (’93), and had been modified for an early chassis. It is a much thinner gauge and is overall narrower, not by modification. Even though it will bolt up to the engine it dose not fit well, especially the front piece. The holes for the exhaust side spark plugs are much further forward and will require a lot of modification to fit/look good. I know my engine tin is original b/c it’s exactly like the tin that came on Paul’s engine. I was wondering if this tin might be some aftermarket set, seeing that it is a smaller gauge. I am certain that the differences that are a problem are from manufacture not modification. So now I’m not sure what to do. I have two sets of tin that will not work in their current state and will both require a lot of modification, repair, and compromise to make it work. My other options are: Contact Porsche and see if the three pieces that need replacing are available -$$$, and then go ahead and modify the tin for my car like I was planning to do. Call Dr. Timmins and see if he has the pieces or the whole set and maybe just have him modify it for me also. Make replacement parts myself and do the modifications (lots of time). See if any of you guys happen to have a few extra pieces lying around. ![]() What do you think I should do? Everything else is going pretty good, albeit a little slower than I’d like, but this is really starting to get frustrating. BTW, anyone want to buy a NIB Sachs Power clutch- I have two. ![]()

I looked at the fiberglass stuff and it was okay. I tried to modify early tin, NOT even on a good day.
Buy some sheets of aluminum, some rivets, and have at it. I used the stock rear piece with mods. The side pieces I made almost like the stock pieces except a little wider to "grab the seal". The front piece (on the back of the engine) was the pain in the a$$ part of the project. At least you can get the contour of the back "arch" while the engine is out. The aluminum looks cool when your finished and you don't have to paint/powder coat it. http://www.metalsdepot.com/products/alum2.phtml?page=sheet&LimAcc= Last edited by Embs; 10-04-2003 at 02:48 AM.. |

the 3.6 liter tin is available from Porsche. Seem to recall it not being excessively expensive - couple of hundred to do the whole engine.
The trick is, tin comes in two different sizes for the 3.6, (turbo vs non turbo) further, the NA version of the tin changed between MY 91/92 some slight modifications were made again between MY 92\93. PM me if you are interested, I can send a diagram with all the parts and part numbers. AFJuvat
