Original 935 engine -- will I sell it?
Guys,
I'm trying to sell an original 935 engine (type 930/73) for a friend. ![]() http://www.holscope.com/935_engine/ So far, I've placed an ad in the classifieds forum, posted a heads up in this forum, and I've listed it on eBay. I had a lot of interest from eBay trawlers, but the people who placed bids were a long, long way from the reserve, which was $80K USD. Am I peddling something that'll never sell? Is the price my friend is asking accurate? I look forward to your replies. I don't know what the motor is worth. But at that price there are very few buyers. It will likely take a long time given the limited pool.

Chuck,
That's what I'm afraid of. Ryan, Yes, this is one of Bruce's spare engines. Thanks very much for the heads up on Gunnar Racing. I've just sent them an e-mail. Matt Holcomb MFIWDP 1974 911 Carrera 2.7 (RoW) Dedicated Homepage Engine Rebuild Homepage Pelican Gallery Profile |

Last time I checked, some 935s were going for around $100K. Of course, Dave Aase is trying to sell his for $235K.
It's a very limited market. I was brought in recently to do some consulting on the value of 917 engines. My research surprised even me - these engines' values go up and down depending upon who needs one. Vasek Polak couldn't sell four 917 engines a few years ago - there were no takers. Yet, if one of these blew up, then there would be a demand. Could be worth a lot of $$$ to someone with a 935 missing an engine. Though it's a race engine and not a street engine - thus even a more limited market. Try calling Jerry Woods - he had a bunch of these last time I was there... -Wayne

Consult "The Wealth of Nations", i.e. Economics 101, by the brilliant Scot Adam Smith. It's only worth what someone will pay for it (duh). There must be some gearhead out there... Would it fit in my '85... maybe if I remove the valence

Wayne,
Thanks for your reply. I e-mailed Jerry Woods last week; I'll give them a call next week if I don't get a reply. Ben, I'm told it will fit in my '74 Carrera. So it should fit in your '85. I can't imagine what 600bhp would be like in a 1000-1200kg 911. Thing is that 600bhp is easy attainable with turbo-converted 3.6, for less than 20k$...so as long as brute power is concerned, the price is very steep.
As Wayne said, it's only worth selling to someone who has 935 and who wants original engine...it's not cost effecive for anything else.

In todays economy, very few will be able to cough up that ammount for an engine. I dont think it will sell this time around. Very unique product that only will sell when there is a unique demand.
That said, think it will fit in my 914?

Wonder how drivable (or un drivable) that engine is for a street application?

That's the other problem, it would really have to go to a 935. It's my understanding that those motors have more lag and build power much later than a street motor, but with todays turbo's and technology you can build a turbo motor that is more flexible and builds power sooner with less lag. It would probably not make a very good street motor, but it would be a blast.

Plus i believe it's designed for high revs, meaning even more lag!

You're going to have to wait to find someone who needs a correct 935 motor - it's intrinsic value is in the fact that it's a 935 engine, not necessarily it's bHP.
For someone who just wants a gobs of power, there's a lot of cheaper/faster/better ways to get there. ImagineAuto could probably do 3 streetable engines with that kind of HP for the cost of a 935 engine. Spending $80k to put this engine in a street car doesn't get you much more than bragging rights. BTW, does anyone make a repro flat fan setup?
