911 Ball Joint removal
In absence of the special tool that loosens the ring that holds the ball joint in the control arm is there an alternative to removing this. I am only going to do remove once and replace with new.
Thanks David |

If using hammer and chisel to loosen nut doesn't work: Drill big hole at junction of castle nut and ball joint. Don't go all the way to the a-arm material! This leaves a much weakened place in the castle nut. Then chisel straight down at that place. Nut splits and then can can be rotated off. I'm sure there are other ways but this is what I read about here and then did myself.

Before you make another commercial for Dremel, slide over to your local pawn shop. Look for the big sockets that are used for front wheel drive of 4wd trucks. I found a socket there that I adjusted with a dremel tool. It now looks very much like the factory tool only is much better: cheap!

drill, cold chisel, 2lb mini sledge. Its primitive, but mine wasnt going to move any other way.
I can lone you the socket if youve got a impact wrench big enough to twist the castle nut off. My impact wouldnt budge it. |

You will distroy the teeth on the tool if it is used to remove the nut.
Cut 2 groove 180 degrees apart with the dremel and tap with chisel and out she comes. Save the tool for installing the nut. Good luck and Happy New Year

Regardless of the method used to remove the old nut, without the proper tool you won't be able to properly torque the new nut when you reassemble the suspension. And yes, you will need a new nut even if you use the Porsche tool - the threads on the nut are very fine and they sit where they get a lot of road trash and moisture so they rust up really well.
Look at it this way - even if you have to buy the tool the do-it-yourself savings will make it a cost-justified purchase. Jim |

Once you get the ball joints off, which pieces will you need to order to get new ones on? Which parts are destroyed or are parts that should be replaced?

I replaced the wedge bolts and nuts (hold ball joint to strut) also. They're not expensive and I hurt the bolt ends a little bit, pounding them out.
