Irritating oil leak--clutch, too?
I have a leak from the top of the engine...oil coming off the bell housing, falling on the passenger side heat exchanger frequently causes me to be mistaken for the mosquito spray truck at stoplights.
It's time to fix it. I suspect that either the breather gasket or an O ring is bad, but I can't really see enough to try to go after it. Now for the real question: should I just drop the engine and fix everything while I'm in there--including a clutch replacment? It's been about 50K miles since the clutch was last renewed, but the thing pulls just fine with no slippage. Or do I just do the partial drop and see what can been seen? I know some of ya'll have had this issue before. Any recommendations?

If the clutch is not slipping leave it alone. I had a similiar oil leak and it turned out to be the oil pressure switch. Easy fix with the engine in the car. Oil pressure switch... 15 minute fix!!! I did remove the breather box to get a little more room but it wasn't necessary; didn't even get to the switch from that side. You can see the switch if you look between the air meter and the filter housing; Access over the top with a long extension and a 24mm deep well socket; unplug-remove-replacea! Piece of cake.
You DO NOT have to do a partial drop. I am 6' 200lbs and I had no trouble reaching the switch. For those that need to do this repair, do not drop the engine and don't dread it. Good luck, Ben

Part of my problem is trying to locate the source of the leak. Any tips on finding it? I'd really rather not drop the engine just yet...

If you want a really clean engine and a 2 week project, drop it and clean it up. Things are so much easier when the engine is out.

Definitely pull the motor. You may or may not need to do the clutch, but you can do everything else that needs to be done while it's out.

Well, I may not have fixed THE problem, but I fixed one. Took off the airbox and sure enough, there was some fresh oil on the top of the engine. After cleaning things up and running the car, oil reappeared. With a mirror and by feel, I couldn't determine the source. Cleaned things up again, and placed a clean shop cloth between the switch and the top of the thermostat. Oil, again. To get a better view, I pulled on the breather hose to move it a bit--and the darned thing wasn't clamped at all--it just slid right off!
Following an appropriate burst of profanity, and then a few words of thanks, the clamp was tightened and when the engine run, no oil. Well, it could still be the named suspects, but the breather hose was obviously dumping oil. Score another for support from this board! Thanks folks--
