How do I measure my brakes for pads?

I need to order front brake pads for my 77 . I know that they are steal but I need to choice between two sizes. What do I measure to determine which pad I need. I have heard that you measure the diameter of the pistion and I also heard that you measure the width of the old pad. Can someone please post a drawing and point to the two points to measure.

Thanks
Rick

Out of curiousity, why do you need to measure them? Is it because you have none OE calipers?

Pull off the pads on one side of the car and take them with you when you pick up the new ones.

No the oem's are still on the car, but when I went to order them on Pelican parts , it shows two different sizes for my year car, and I'm not sure what they are measuring.

The problem with that is I order all of my stuff From our Host, Pelican Parts.

Garage
They are either A which has a 3.5" mountiing bolt patten or M which has a 3" mounting bolt pattern

Your calipers are likely not this clean but A is on the left M on the right
