I have a cam profile question, Help Please!
Will cams from a 85 Cis 3.0L work in a 80 Cis 3.0L motor? I think the part number from a 82 to 88 or 89 are the same. But the 80 has a different number. And if it will work does anything else have to be changed? (gears, distributor,)
The reason I ask is that I bought a freshly rebuilt motor ,that has never been started, and I'm having problems with it. The right side is not running properly. We think it's firing too early or too late. The local wrench pulled the cams and said they looked fine ,he said they where from a 85 CIS (Part number) I told him the motor was from a 80 3.0L. He said all though the part numbers are different and the cams are a different profile, that they should work. Is this true, can someone please confirm this. Thanks Rick

No such thing as an 85 CIS (except for a turbo). Last CIS NA 911 was in 83.
All 911SC cams were the same profile, I believe the part number difference was for the change from how the sprocket mounted to the cam (big-ass nut for early SC, bolt for late SC). Did he degree the cams? really the only way to know if they have been reground to something different. Tom |

Pelican shows all 911's from 78-89 using the same cams. Wonder if the cam timing is set right?

My bad , He said an 85 SC not a 85 CIS SC.
Yes he did check the cam timing twice. The wrench that rebuilt it called my local guy and ask him to check the timing and then pull the cams to make sure that the correct cams are being used. He then replaced them and timed it. He has friends at Brumos Porsche Racing in Fl. and a few friends somewhere in Atlanta, that he has spoke with and they are baffled. When I walked in the shop today to check on things he was actualy standing there scatching his head with this confused look on his face. Would you set the timing any different for a 80 or a 85? Are the settings the same? Thanks Rick

No such thing as an 85 SC, last SC was 83, when the Carrera came out with Motronic replacing the CIS. No more hydro-mechanical injection, just beautiful fully electronic injection...
