Cutting fibre glass
I want/need to cut some fibre glass, it is already on thr car.
Hacksaw blade? how many TPI ? hand or can I use recipricating saw. Or do I need a special blade! Or should I use a wheel. I need a relatively neat cut. Although I can refinish it as it is the insides of brake cooling ducts so not awefully visible. Jeff

Do what AFJuvat says. And make sure you wear a mask! You don't want that $hit in your lungs.

Long sleeve shirt and put a fan at your back to blow the dust away from you or you will itch for hours. The trouble with a blade is it likes to catch on the part as things wiggle.

Try an air saw... a small air powered reciprocating saw.

You can also put a piece of masking tape over where you intend to cut to help minimize any fraying of the gel-coat edge...

Chipping of the gelcoat is due to rotation of the cut, if the grinder or cutoff wheel is rotating down thru the gel first, it will not chip. If you try and grind up ,it will always chip! sawzall, jig saw reciprocating air saw will always chip...

Anyone have any techniques to offer for removing a section of material, then rejoining so the edges/contours match?
Thanks, Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

You just need some resin, fibeglass mat and some catalyst. All available at most hardware stores; I know OSH has it. There are some websites about working with FG.
Where are you? I did FG tooling and laminating for years in another life. I'm not anxious to touch the stuff again, but I will help. |
