67S resto, a blast and front pan replace

Thought you guys might want to see how I go about the restoration process and the steps along the way. Clients 67 S , original paint, 80K, owned since 68, left fender had been replaced in 68, car has seen one winter, silver paint is dead. The car will get a bare metal repaint, the interior is mint. Client removed all periphials, glass, lights, seats and suspension. The pan has been completly scraped of all the undercoating, tedious, but makes the blasting go faster after a full under body blast the front pan had just a hint of pinhole rust, the outer pan is cut out, the gas tank support is good, because of the supersedure of parts, the support will be saved, to retain the "original" battery area. The shell is rolled into the booth, naked belly ready for epoxy. 2 coats of black epoxy are now applied.

the paint is dry, supplied air is a must have with any sprayed product The front pan was removed with several tools, the drill for all spotwelds, air chisel to loosen them and to trim along the wheelhouse, I choose not to drill these spots to avoid distortion and swiss cheese effect. Instead the wheel house flange is ground with a 4" grinder, removing the 1/2" flange remains, as the metal gets thin it " blues ", letting you know the layer has been removed, leaving just the wheelhouse flange prepped. There will be a removal of the gas tank support to facllitate a repair at the horizontal flanges where the fender support/wire tubes com thru. A trial fit of the Restoration Design front pan and we are getting close. The repro pans do not include a reinforcement on the inside rear bolt receptacles, therefore I add these out of sheet stock. Also the part gets mounted to the Celette jig for a "true"fit

Here are the jigs for the 911 mounted to the bench. These babies are gold. No other frame machine provides the correct measurements as this bench can, it either fits or does not.the bench from the front The jigs from the back. The red towers have 3" slugs inside and extend up for a check and or hold to the body. You can see the red front struts, rear shocks and rear engine mount. there are yellow mounts that bolt to the remaining under body points, front suspension, transmission, and torsion tube mounts. Other frame machines are more "universal" and faster to mount a vehicle on, however, they only grab the pinchweld on the rockers, and do not hold nor measure the specific points as the dedicated jigs of the Celette. The Celette system is much more labor intensive, both insurance companies and shops are not interested in spending the time/money for setup. I think its the best for both restoration and collision of Porsches, no alignment issues afterwards. The 67s will be down on the bench in the next day or two, will post more if interested!

I shoot PPG DPlf, I sprayed a bare metal panel and left it out for years, still holding well. I use it as a base and as topcoat sealer.

Damon,

You are an artist when it comes to porsche restorations. When are you going to send that orange soft targa to California?

doOod! Can I book time to get my '74 Carrera RS 3.0 look SC on the Celette to zero the chassis out to factory spec?

Helluva nice piece o' work there Matey! Done right, that's for damn sure. With the values appreciating for these precious early cars, it makes all the sense in the world to do the fundamental work right and "dead nuts" correct!

Best, Jens

The worst part about all this is that he makes it sound so easy.

To do list:
buy milk
bathe dog
restore Porsche
get haircut

Damon, as always, your explainations are only out done by your work. That's why you are the Man of Steel (and sometimes Fibre glass)

Wow, finally this guy is getting the cudos he deserves. I'm happy to say he is doing my Targa late winter for a spring finish. Hopefully he will post all the way through Ed's S job. This car is going to be sweeeeety.

To Andy S
I don't get mad, I get even! Actually Damon has a new factory floor pan resting right in front of the "S". Lots less work. See you both at the 25th banquet. No "dumkoff awards". I've seen the agenda. Get back to work. Three days a week are not enough.
