964 bypass mufflers vs. headers

Hey everyone,

I've been agonizing over which header system to install on my '92 C2 and I've come to the conclusion that that they all suck. I've heard both B&B and GHL systems and decided that both sound horrible. Now, I will say that a GHL header+muffler on a 930 is possibly the nicest exhaust i've ever heard on a turbo, but their NA exhausts really seem to suck. B&Bs just resonate so badly you can't even drive the car.

So, I was pretty much going to give up, I drilled 14 two inch holes into my airbox, and I have a factory secondary muffler bypass pipe, and it sounds pretty darn nice especially under hard acceleration. I'd still like to grab as much performance as possible though, and came across a fabspeed ad. I don't know anything about the quality of their products, but I noticed that both Fabspeed and GHL make a comparably priced primary muffler bypass pipe and euro-premuffler catbypass pipe. I'd probably only do one mod at a time, but they're only $300 so it's not like throwing away $2500 on a system I might really hate and be unable to return. And if I don't like it, I can sell it at a loss and not feel terrible.

I just wanted to know if anyone has done this to their 964, and if so how much louder will getting rid of the primary muffler make the car? I don't want it to be so annoyingly loud that I don't want to drive it anymore, or that cops would question its legality (granted that doesn't apply in SC, but still), but I'd still like to get as much of a free flowing exhaust as possible without needing to go to headers.

So, if anyone has done this mod, I'd love to hear some of your impressions of it, and how loud you thought your cars became afterwards.

Thanks,
Andrew

I think i tied almost everything on the market for 964s , to delete the Cat and the Primary Muffler is a nice setup and will get you a deeper sound but not louder ( or not much louder ) But you need to keep the Final Muffler ( under right rear Fender ) or it will be extremly loud .
As a nice side effect it will give you a little more Pep . Make sure to install the Lambdasensor ,evn so you dont have a cat it will still adjust the Mixture .

Thanks, the car never had the secondary muffler under the fender, so if that's the one that really keeps the noise down, I guess losing the primary won't do too much to make it louder.

Does anyone have an opinoin about Fabspeed? I was really impressed with the videos they had on their website, and the breakdown of how they construct their products, but looks can be very decieving. My mechanic is still pushing me towards GHL, but I thought I'd ask if anyone had been impressed or unimpressed by fabspeed.

wastintime,

I have a buddy that has a Strosek bypass pipe and tip for a 964 that he is willing to sell. Let me know if you are interested and I will see what he will do on price.
