Shifting into 1st, and 2nd, on a 915 gives me the feeling that the gears are not very wide. When moving the lever, the first resistance is the syncro and then there is very little travel to be fully engaged. How wide are these gears? How much mesh is there when in gear? 15mm?

The gears are always in alignment with one another. What you are feeling is the dog teeth engaging when moving the slider ring. The dimention of the dog teeth is very small, maybe an 1/8". It's either in or out, there is no in between and has nothing to do with the width of the gears. Which, BTW, are about an inch wide.
