The "Spare Tire"

Just a couple of questions I should have thought of asking way earlier than the day before I'm out on the road for about a 1,000 mile drive.

I have never had the spare out to test. Are they pretty bulletproof or do they need periodic testing for leakproofness? Come to think of it, I've never tested the compressor . . .

Am I wasting my time worrying about this?

in my experience , you do need to check your spare from time to time
tyres are made of rubber, and rubber ages.. when it doesn , the tires go flat...

i just carry fix a flat, and have road side assistance coverage

I've heard that you can collapse them yourself, but it might not be easy. Yes, they sometimes fail due to age. I carry two cans of Fix-A-Flat. Roadside Assistance is also good.

I recently tested my collapsible spare. A big non-event. I filled it with my portable air tank until round, let it stad a bit to see if it kleaked, and then pushed the air release button and, as if by magic, the unit folded itself up again.

The way I figure, I usually have my cell phone. If the tire can get me closer to a safe detination, that's better but I have a backup plan as well.

Like Harry says, the spare will collapse back its stored shape when deflated. If you plan on keeping it in your car I would check it out at least yearly. I have my spare, the jack and the compressor stored in the garage. I just carry a can of fix a flat, a AAA card and a cell phone when I travel.

Thanks guys,

I'll just get a can of fix-a-flat on the way out of town [or maybe a truck stop since I'll be leaving at 0400.

Maybe it would be a good idea to check that thing out on my return.

Cool

I also carry a rope flat fix kit in case I can pull the nail.
