Excellent.
You know, as I was reading, I couldn't help but think that some how, some way, the story was an analogy to life itself.

That author really gets it. I'm sure many of us have sold cars that were as fast as (or faster than) our 911s because they didn't give us the right feeling. For me it was a 300zx twin turbo.
Now Porsche is building is own 300zx - an overpowered, overweight luxury sports car that some lust after but, when it comes right down to it, is just another car to be compared with all the other cars out there. Of course, not everyone thinks like that...and I hope many people will keep buying the new Porsche cars. BTW, did you guys see that the new Cadillac SUV beat the Cayenne in C&D's latest test? Even disregarding the results of the comparo, when was the last time a Porsche needed to be compared against a Caddy?

Well, it was good ... except for the part about a '75 model doing 145 mph! Down a mineshaft, maybe! I wonder if he really doesn't know that is 15 mph optomistic???

He might have been trying to avoid waxing nostalgic, but I couldn't help thinking back to the allure that the 911's had for me back when I was a poor motorhead in high school. Setting the goal that I would one day own one was something that drove me on.
I wonder if I'd feel the same about the marque if I was in HS today looking at the modern version...doubt it.

I think a correctly optioned 996 is MUCH better looking than some other model 911's that were built in the past. They have lost something over the years but not compared to some other 60-70's era cars.

The GT3 (and GT2) are cool by me. Just a little (lot) pricey!

A great rant--I forwarded the heck out of it.
After instructing students in nearly every type of car that Porsche has built, the new cars always leave me with the same feeling--"Anybody can drive this thing fast. " Extraordinary competence, but dumbed down on the fun side.
