Anyone looked at this cobalt blue 964?
Has anyone looked at this cobalt blue 1991 964 C2 coupe for sale in Barrington, IL?:
http://www.pca.org/mart/classifieds.pl?db=cars&website=&language=&session_key=3f8ddf7115fc1f08&search_and_display_db_button=on&results_format=long&db_id=5370&query=retrieval Normally the early 964 issues would scare me away but that cobalt blue is hard to resist. This same car was for sale in November 2000 when I bought my Carrera, and I almost went for it. Then the buyer wanted $34K. A year later he again offered it for sale at $39K. Now its at $30K - still a bit high for a '91 964. Would it be correct to think that at 50K miles any leaking heads or flywheel problems would have already manifested themselves, or would that be wishful thinking? Strange how an unusually attractive colour can make one think of abandoning caution ... Have to keep reminding myself how easy the Carrera is to maintain. Maybe I should just get it resprayed cobalt blue; its already been repainted once.

That's a great color. Offer him $25,000.

It's also listed for sale in the Pelican classifieds. The year wasn't listed so it was hard to correctly judge it's value. I saw the ad last week and I can't get the color out of my head either. But, I'm thinking in the long run a repaint would be cheaper.

Definitely beautiful. The flywheel and leaking heads may not have appeared after only 50k, so you're not out of the woods. However, I think (but am not positive--I forgot) that the factory took care of the leaking heads (i.e. gaskets--what a concept!) sometime during MY 91. You can find out the engine number on the first update if you do a search (maybe you'll have to check Rennlist's 964 board's FAQs). If it has been done, I wouldn't not buy the car because of the flywheel; just change it out at the same time as the clutch--just replace the clutch early.
However, the asking price is *expensive.* You can easily find bombproof 93s and 94s for less than that price. Good luck, Jon '93 C2

A friend of mine had a '91 964 in white with only 41K for sale for almost 2 years at $33K. This car had all updates and was just spotless. Sent it to Manheim and was lucky to get $22K. It's just a shame these cars don't get more respect.

I hate to be the devil's advocate, but I'd still watch out, especially if he hasn't sold the car for such a long time. I found my 964 in the PCA classifieds, and it looked (and still does look) absolutely beautiful... of course it turned out to be a real P.O.S. after I got it home. So, it might look pretty, but just be careful.

The update on the Cylinder head gasket didn't occur until late in 1991 - otherwise they are awesome cars. I still miss my C2 - Sure the Carrera revs quicker - but the torque on the 3.6 has to be felt to be believed. 65 - 126 seems to happen as fast as 0-60.
Just make sure you have a PPI done by someone who knows 964 issues and you shoud be good to go. It's been in a cooler environment so hopefully - even if it has the older 3.6 you might be in good shape if you don't commute it in a hot environment. You are right in the 964's don't have any respect. That's tough too - your car get's no respect (until you get it on the autocross or DE course!)

I too saw that color and think it's great. White interior is taboo. No thanks.
If the car hasn't sold for years, i'd venture to guess that the guy's asking price is pretty firm (even though he's adjusted it over the years). Also, being that it's a concours winning car, i'd venture to guess that this would also make the fella firm in his asking price. One advantage to the concours history is that you're probably not going to get burned by that situation where pictures of the car can lead you to believe it's nicer than it actually is. People think my car is really nice because of the pictures on my site. It's clean, but the colllection of dents, scratches, road rash and just plain age add up to make it a sharp looking car. Hardly excellent though. Just shoot the guy an email and ask him about the cylinder and flywheel issues? His attention to detail may have got the best of him and he had the work done to avoid these problems. This car is an example of one that's too nice, IMO. You can't drive it anywhere for fear of getting a ding or getting it dirty or whatever. I don't buy new cars anymore for just that reason. It used to drive me crazy worrying about something so dumb. I'm actually glad my '87 has it's share of dents and scratches so i'm less protective of it. Lets me enjoy driving it much more.
