rocker replace while in car?
Some of you might remember my long saga of tracing a tick in my 70T. Took it to a local guy who thought it was lash and found out it wasn't . He said maybe worn rocker faces and gauled cam lobes. I thought it was exhaust leaks.
Well, it wasn't exhaust leaks. Clearing up my exhaust leak problem has just made the other clack more pronounced and crystal clear. Its something near the heads on #2 or #3. Not deeper becuase my leakdown and compression tests came back great. Plus the power is still nice. The tick is definately 1 cyl. Well my question is: 1) Can I pull the rockers while in the car and physically inspect them for wear that could cause this click? 2) What is the labor gonna be like for replaceing the cam towers and redoing cam timing? trying to get it ready for sale... =( michael

I'm pretty sure this is possible to do with the engine still in the car, although it would be tricky. There was a lot of info in an old post on the Rennlist board but I can¡'t find it right now?!?
Actually I can't even find the search feature in the new-look Rennlist forum. What gives with that?!? Am I suffering from 'domestic blindness'?!? |

I keep hearing about "RennList". Is it similar to this one? Early Porsche and the like?

Rennlist is more for the later cars... 964 onwards. Still some early car discussion there though.

You can remove the rockers with the engine in the car provided that :
1. the shafts were inserted in the correct direction to begin with 2. you are able to lossen the locking bolt on the shaft and get them to move. DO NOT SCORE the bore that the shaft rests in or you will have oil leaks that will haunt you forever. Also, make sure you know how to place the shaft back in the bore correctly or you will have oil leaks - there is a procedure in Bentley and the Workshop manuals that outline the procedure. You should read a manual or guide and fully understand how the shaft locking mechanism works before you try this yourself. good luck-

Thomas:
Would I probably see the wear on the rocker faces or rocker sharft wear that is causing this really loud clatter? I mean, if I get the covers off, loosen the shaft, slide it out, and just look at it, will it be clear to me what the problems were? Its seems to me that worn rocker shafts would leak oil perhaps, but not make a hell of a racket when hot like my car does. Its purrs like a kitten when cold, then gets embarrassingly loud within 2 miles of my house. CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK etc... only from one side and from one of two cyls. Michael
