I am in the process of updating the exhaust system on my 87 911 cab from stock to a Dansk sport muffler and pre-silencer. The stock cat converter has a heat shield bolted to it. Will I still need the heat shield with the pre-silencer? Fortunatley I do not need the cat since we do not have emmission checks here (NC). Being proposed but for "96" and newer cars w/ OBD. Once the exhaust is done, on to the Steve W chip. Can't wait! Thanks in advance, this board has been great for info. Also, any tips or tricks on replacing the exhaust as I try to do most work myself.

The heat shield is only there to prevent you from catching a field of dry grass on fire should you park in one. Cats get hotter than normal exhaust so all manufacturers shield them. You won't need it for the premuffler.
To replace exhaust, oxy-acetlene torches work best for cutting off rusted bolts. Second choice is a Dremel and some fiber cutoff wheels. Put your new system together with stainless steel fasteners and anti-sieze in case you want to remove it in the future.
