changing starter in '89 911

i'm about to change my starter in my '89 911. the Bentley manual states that you must lower the transmission to complete the repair.

anyone with experience with this repair care to offer some advice, and possible things to watch out for?

thanks.

I believe that what you need to do is lower it just enough so you can get your hand and socket wrench in to get to upper nut that holds the starter to the bellhousing off. Can't be done with the transmission up snug against the bottom of the center tunnel.

Stephan is right. Us lucky enough to own a G50 get the added benefit of a transmission drop to replace the starter. I replaced mine a few months ago on my 89. The Bentley manual was good in the description. You also need a few ratchet extensions to get to the top barrel nut. Once there, it took a breaker bar to get that top nut loose. It still was difficult even with the tranny lowered.

To get that socket head nut, I sawed off a length of 10 mm hex and used a 10 mm wrench on it. Be sure to get the transmission support on right as it, ah, can be installed wrong. Lower the tranny far enough to get adequate access to the nut and there you are.
As I recall, the sway bar the heater ducts, the shift rod connector, the wires, the ground strap and the transmission support. You must use a jack to lower the support.
