Need more garage space
I have a 2 car garage which currently houses the 76 911, a Harley, my wife's laundry room and a lot of junk. The car is the newest member of the family. The wife is complaining that there is not enough room. I need to do something (other than get rid of the wife) to make more room. cabinets, shelfs, etc. Any ideas??

Sounds pretty simple. Remove the Harley and the junk. It's amazing how simple life becomes once you throw out all the junk.

You are calling Harleys JUNK???
Well now...I'm sure I could talk a couple of the "boys" to come around to your house and discuss the differences....LOL How about a better idea....build on...make the garage bigger. That way we won't have to come and visit you and explain the "rules" of the game.... Bob

Is there room above?? junk doesn't have to be kept warm! If so, drop down stairs are cheap. Cabinets are a good way to go, as are wheels under things. I prefer the upper cabinets s they leave the floor clear.
My workbench is on wheels so I can "reconfigure". I also framed a "bump out" closet....6 feet wide, 2 feet deep and 7 feet high, it holds lots of stuff, and didn't require any of the usual foundation stuff. I can explain if you need such a thing... I also went to a price club place and got two sets of those wheel dolly deals...$62 a car, and the cars now roll easily right up to the edge of the wall. Great for me as I have tight space, and the two cars aren't used everyday. Griots sells them too, but theirs are big bucks, and you don't need to jack the car on them. Also, I spent some bucks on a set of plastic containers and a label maker. More stuff in less sapce, and I can find it quickly. Other than that, I would recommend selling the Hog and getting a proper V twin...a Ducati. Takes less room, rides better, and doesn't have that obnoxious flattulent sound...(Unless your Harley is a cool oldie, instead of a just made oldie..) IMHO....

Park the washing machine and drier out on the street and you could turn the laundry room into the best ever workshop! Just think of the hours of fun you could have - plus she will have all the room in the world.

What about the basement? If you have space in the backyard you can get a little tool shed for about $300 and store the Harley and junk.
Now, there is her point of view. Why not have a garage sale and put the Harley on eBay (or wherever)? My fiance has an A4, I have the 911 and a 356. Problem is we only have a two car garage and it's a real PITA to manuever the driveway. So, I'm restoring the 356 so I can sell it. I would love to have a ton of toys but not at her expense.

A stackable washer and drier make things a little easier.
Ditch the midlife crisis machine and have a big yard sale.

Build her a nice new room... Or get the new water and energy conserving washer dryer combos that stack (see above post). She'll like the idea of new machinery.
Stuff that rarely gets used can go up high on shelves or down low. Look around... Also, you probably have a bunch of parts etc. that belong on eBay. |

As someone who currently has five (5!) cars stuffed in a three car garage, I know the feeling of no room left for even oxygen to breathe.
I may be renting a small warehouse so a friend and I can move all the Porsche parts to one location. We both have a parts car taking up space in our garages, along with lots of other parts scattered around town. I do hate the idea of paying rent, so I'm also thinking of buying another rental house that has a big detached garage. Rent the house, and I have the garage space paid for by the tennants. |

I made a big hanging shelf (3x8 feet). Two sides are attached to the wall about 7 feet off the ground. Chains from the ceiling support the shelf so there aren't any supports underneath it. You can walk under it.

I am building a seperate garage and have ordered a four post lift. The two P-cars get stacked on one side, the shop/snooker table area is on the remaining 300 square feet. I will have a ping pong table suspended from the ceiling that can be lowered to cover the snooker table.....it's far enough away so that I can FINALLY enjoy my surround sound and shoot em up movies w/o the kids b!tching about the noise.....like Brittany Spears at max volume is any better....
Up top will be a flat roof with railing and a hoop to practice shots...nicest view of the ocean as well.....

You can rent a woodchipper for all the junk, and then put the harley in the living room as a decoration. You could put lights on it at xmas, fake spiderwebs during halloween

If you have a bedroom on a connecting wall of the garage you could knock out a wall, add a garage door and have an airconditioned/ heated work shop.

You have a lot more room than you know, but unless you rethink lifestyle and accumulated crap there is no way you are going to find it.
First thing's first: the washing room belongs to both of you. Clean it up, and give it first attention to show your wife you care about your marriage and that you don't really believe that is her responsibility alone. Put shelves in there, as far up as you can, that will fit standard Rubbermaid baskets. Keep the Harley if it is not a Sportster. For the rest of the garage, pick a dry day and move everything out onto the driveway. RuleOne: nothing goes back in unless it can account for itself. Group everything into like kinds and plan on packing the less-used into containers you will hide elsewhere in the house, such as the attic. In the garga, build shelves into the upper sections whose dimensions fit standard plastic Rubbermaid or equiv. containers, typically 12" x 14+". Paint the entire garage white to help light the place. Consider painting the floor. Put in flourescents as needed. Wire for 220 if you plan on using a heavy-draw compressor or otherwise. It is not so hard to do. I just did this at home and the results can be pretty amazing. All of my spare parts, etc are packed into reusable, sturdy containers above my head and out of sight. Best of luck, John

I recommend going to the New Yankee Workshop website. They have measured drawings for workbenches, shelves, etc. If you've ever seen the show, the guy makes really functional stuff. I just ordered them a few days ago for a new house/garage I'm moving into in a couple of weeks. It gives parts lists, vendor, dimensions, etc. You can just scale everything to fit your space.
