Lightbulb Up in smoke.

Well not the whole car ..... I was recently converting my 84 AC from R18 to R134. I was adding some freon from the rear and everything was going fine when I noticed that the AC clutch had dis-ingaged. I thought that the car inside temp had reached a normal level so I opened the door to check the thermostst and discovered the interior was filled with white smoke! (electrical smell) I just purchased this car and still learning much about it. It seams like it has fans everywhere. Can anyone tell me which fan may have gone up in smoke? PS 1) The fan from the dash slider is still working, the fan from the defrost switch (0,1,2,3) is not comming on. 2) I did hear the fan sqeeling in the cab when I first started working on the AC

There is a fan in the front trunk that works with the A/C and seems prone to problems. It's right next to the battery.

Possibly the evap fan, located inside the smugglers box.
If the clutch disengaged, the evap could of frozen up.

I would guess the evaporator fan as well if you had smoke in the cabin and not from under the front of the car.

Seadweller here on the forum put together an EXCELLENT technical guide for replacing the motor. You can contact him through the forum, or if you want to send me a PM or email (with email address) I'll send his article to you.

There's a factory recommended upgrade to add a fuse for this fan. I've seen the damage that can be done if that thing starts burning...not pretty and not cheap.

88911coupe,

Interesting, and probably a good idea. Do you have the amperage of the fuse that is supposed to be added?

Also could be one or both of the two fans by your feet. Have had these go and smoke up the interior.

Thanks for all the help. So far I found the fan in the smugglers box was frose up. It had blown the 25A fuse. The replacemet was difficult but I got it done. The tip by Teutonics and article by Seadweller was priceless. The only thing I would add to his list of tools is a set of very long needel nose pliers. It appers, I have other fans out as well. So far the front AC fan is also bad (burned open) and still looking at the other fans. As best I can tell the car has a total of 6 fans. 1. Main blower 2. Left heat foorwell. 3. Right heat footwell 4. Engine heat blower. 5. AC blower in smuggler box. 6. AC evaporator blower at front bumper. This is getting expensive!
