'72 Project, part three..
OK, I finally had some time to work on the RSR project. After only three weekends of work, it is almost ready to go to the body shop to get the flairs and paint. One or two more areas of paint stripping to go (door jambs, etc). Here are some photos. The first one is the doors. Second, the hood, with the rear flairs, front fenders, and the 7x9x16s in the background. Third the pile of boxes that hold all of my parts, like the rear sprig plates, bbs wheels, fuel cell, and roll cage pieces in the background. Fourth, the Ducktail and rear bumpers, and fifth and sixth, the car itself. As you can see by a project of this size, there are literally thousands of pieces everywhere in my garage!
I am still having MAJOR problems deciding what color to paint it. Although Periwinkle-ish is still in the running, so is Silver, Green, and Orange and a few others!! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066611758.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066611772.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066611793.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066611850.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066611898.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066611909.jpg |
Did you find much rust once you had stripped the paint off, around the door jams and wheel wells, doors etc?
|
Its nice to see another T being resurrected, Paint it orange you wont regret it.
|
Green! Or Ossie blue!
|
It looks like you neeeed a bigger garage:D
What color is Periwinkle? I can't seem to remember |
A bright medium blue
|
If it were my decision:

Aussie, I found two small spots of rust. One on the left rear seat pan about the size of a quarter, and one under the left side door sill plate about the size of a dime. This car is in great shape overall!
Blown, Periwinkle is kinda of a blueish/lavender color. Think Crayola 64 pack, there is a periwinkle crayon. I almost decided on the Konda Green, like in the above photo, but after seeing one in person on Sunday, I think im going away from that. Every picture ive seen of it looks great, but in person it didnt strike me. I do like Orange, but there are several cars in this area the same color. I want something a little different, but not crazy. Oh well, the search continues... but I only have about two weeks left to decide! |
Bahama yellow is a really nice, unique color that is also correct for the period
|
Jack, is that Signal Orange? or do you have a Paint code? It looks different than the Tangerine of the above picture.
|
I don't know. It might be Signal Yellow, or it might be a custom color. I'm no purist when it comes to paint, and to me that color looks great on an early 911, even if it isn't an 'early 911 color.'
|
The car Jack posted looks like Signal Yellow.
The second picture that Jared posted is Signal Orange but it appears a little redder than normal due to the time of day the photo was taken. The green car in Jareds' last photo looks like Viper Green (also known as Kelly Green) not Conda Green. |
NICE WORK !
hello, nice work to do for a winter project !
why not White Grand Prix !http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066679206.jpg :) |
I would go with a bright green color. Here is Jim Patricks 911

|
Marc - Signal Yellow would look great with the flared body.
|
Cop Catcher Red is good. A very light pastel yellow...
I favor Gemini Blue for my next repaint. My Gulf Blue car has always had a very soothing effect on the cop mind -- been stopped 2 or 3 times but never had a ticket in that car. And where I live that's a great record. |
I saw a purple 911 on this site a couple days ago. I don't know the color. I also saw an eggplant purple BMW the other day. Very sharp also. The white one looks good also.
|
The purple color, or eggplant is called aubergine. It is a great color. It almost looks black in low light but even in bright sunlight it isn't a loud purple.
Silver is always a good choice for that period car as well:D |

Pepsi blue :) |
That is one of the best looking 911s I have ever seen. How much have you lowered the car all around?
-Steve |
Is that Nogaro Blue? (Audi)
Are those C2 rocker panels? Thanks for all the pics guys, now its even harder to decide!! |
Two schools of thought from me:
First- Cool early color. I'm into Viper green but I reshot my car based on the code. (it's a '73 but an import from Germany), so I'm glad to hear Jack and others like bold yellows, although i don't think this is orange enough to be signal yellow. Second thought is to go get a House of Kolor paint sample book. Theyhave some really cool dark metalics. They look nearly balck, but the highlights have hue to them. here' my 911 as i was painting it in my barn: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066706786.jpg |
I'm really liking the green but the next one will go silver...
check it out... http://members.cox.net/chris911rs/1969%20Porsche.htm http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066706829.jpg |
That green car gets my vote....great website too. What color green is that then?
|
I never was able to find a correct color name. 1969 was a strange year, there is a lot of unknowns. I think it is Viper green but still not sure.
Thanks for the compliment on the web-site, Chris |

Viper green is the bright grean car in Jared's post. Speaking of green. Here's Raven green with Signal orange right behind it.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1066717230.jpg |
Chris,
What's the number on the paint tag on the drivers door post? |
I painted mine Guards Red.....but if I could have found a shop that had Electric Blue I might have gone that way.
Electric Blue was only used on the '66 Corvette I think....I have never heard of anything else that colour. I also saw a fantastic colour on the frame of a Buell motorcycle...Nuclear Blue....almost iridescent. Bob |
My car is lowered over 3 inches on on stock fuch rims w\205\50 tires. Hard to drive on some streets, but it does not rub w\all the -camber I have. The rockers were custom made by some guy in N.Y. over 10 years ago. The color is pepsi blue. It's the color on the pepsi trucks. Also painted in a garage. I almost painted it yellow as well.
|
I really like cnielsen's green car above. That color looks ALOT like my old Karmann Ghia's "British Racing Green". Not sure if that's a technical color, but that's what mine was called.
|
It's Signal Orange. Same color as mine

Those Junior's house of color paints with the super metallic are like $6000 per gallon, no kidding.
|
chris,
your green car looks wonderful, thanks for taking the time to post pics of the project. |
Thanks for the compliments on the green car and the website! The paint code on the door hinge area is 63-6829. I don't know if that means anything to anybody but I hope it helps.
Beautiful cars! Keep the pics coming... Chris |
Chris, according to the paint code, your car is Signal Green. It does look more like Leaf or Field Green though in some photos. The other one up the page is Raven Green.
|
Well that's a mystery to me. In 68' Signal Green was 6829 which is close to your number but in 69' Signal green was R6001.
Your car looks close to Leaf Green or sometimes called Bush Green but that number in 69' was 62163. Before 72' it's hard to make any sense out of the Porsche color codes because they had no standardized system. The same color would have different codes depending on the year. Example: 6401= 64' slate grey 6601= 66' slate grey Okay then, 6407= 64' signal red 6607= 66' signal red...right? Nope wrong!! 6607= 66' sand beige Go figure. |
When we had the car painted we had all sorts of trouble tracing the paint code to determine the proper color. The shop mixed up a batch of paint that the code supposedly described and it was totally wrong! They ended up scanning the original paint and sending the info off to Dupont where they were able to match it almost perfectly. Love the color and Maaco did a great job. My only regret is that I should have had them put more coats on it. how hard is it to go back and apply more clear at this time???
