Sump plate issues

My 76 has a sump plate without an oil drain plug and I decided that as a part of my oil change this weekend I would replace it with one that had a drain plug. I purchased the plate from Pelican (made by Mainely Custom By Design). After removing the old plate and studs and installing the new studs I tried to install the plate and it wouldn't sit flush with the case (the plate is flat). The screen, which is not removable on my car, bulges down so the flat plate would not work. Has anyone else experienced this? Is the "fixed" sump screen common for a 2.7 or is this something "unique" to my car? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

-Jon

On my '76 which I believe has an OEM set-up the screen is removable (it is attached to a carrier ring which has another sealing gasket between the bottom of engine case and the ring). The screen is also formed upward. Your set-up may have been changed (has the case been split?) or the screen incorrectly installed. Jim

Sounds like you have a later style pump. When I rebuilt my engine I went with a 3.2 pump, and so I have to use the domed sump plate without the drain plug.

Does this thread help? FWIW I don't have a drain plug on my sump plate. I'm not sure what years it's meant to be standard on!?

Jon:

I did the same swap on my '76 Targa (using the Mainely by Design piece) and had no problems. My old sump cover had a drain plug in it (and was beat to hell). I have a '74 2.7 on the shelf that also has a drain plug in the sump cover. I had no clearance issues on my '76 with stock pump and aside from having to scrape the old gasket material off the case (one between case and pick-up screen lip) it went like clockwork.

My case has been apart (by PO) and the "requireds" updated but not an updated oil pump.

New piece looks great too! (damn I need a digital camera)

Thanks for all of your input. I found some pics of the Carerra oil pump and the "fixed" screen on that pump is identical to mine. So, that mystery is solved. The question now is whether or not the "930 turbo / 993 oil pump" plate made by Mainely Custom By Designs and sold on Pelican will work. Is the 930 / 993 pump the same as the Carerra pump?

I have the 930 Turbo pump...and yes it it is bulging down style of screen.
So the plate for mine should be the same as what you need.
