2.2 to 2.4 Question
I am still searching around for an engine project to replace my thumping 110 hp 2.0t
There is a 2.2s engine for sale in my area (Australia) that is in need of a complete rebuild, but I have a hankering for a 2.4s engine. Unlike the USA these kinds of engines are not easy to find, nor cheap to play with. What are the potential pitfalls of playing with this engine? Can I simply replace the 2.2 crank with a 2.4/2.7 crank and have a 2.4s? Just how much work is involved in restoring MFI? Am I better of with a standard 2.4t engine I've found and add webers and S internals? Your thoughts are appreciated.

If you can find a 70.4mm crank you should have a really nice engine. I think it'll put out somewhere around 200hp. More than enough for me.

200 hp is my goal. Combined with the diet I've put my 69 on, I figure I can scare a few carreras at my local DE events
![]() My main fears relate to the MFI and calibrating it for a 2.4 I am assuming the worst case scenario that the engine requires a complete rebuild and that the MFI also requires a complete rebuild (these a fuel system I have no experience with).

John,
Well if you're going to use the 2.2 as your base you will have to do a full rebuild to put the new crankshaft in there. Depending on the money situation your webers will work just fine on the 2.4S but I prefer MFI. Unless you find a good 2.4S pump you'll have to send off the pump to get it recalibrated. You will then need the stacks and throttle bodies as well as some other small items (MFI tinware, etc). The MFI rebuild is about $1k and it might be tough/expensive to find the right stacks and throttle bodies. I know there's a 69E system on ebay right now that you could use as a base.

The 2.2s for sale is complete including the MFI
I'm thinking I'll stick to the 2.4t with webers. The money I'll save can be put into other upgrades

Or keep an eye on the damaged vehicle auctions to buy a crashed SC or 3.2 and swap lots of the bits over.

Hi Bill
I just don't think I can stretch to buying a wreck.... I certainly can't compete with the commercial wreckers at auction!

Would there be that much competion for a crashed 911, apart from a few enthusiasts and maybe Swan? The one I got there were only about 7 people bidding. Mind you bloody Kiwi drivers, there would be lots of crashed ones.

John-
I wouldn't worry too much about the 2.2 MFI working with the 2.4. I had an extensive discussion about this with Gus Phister, as I was concerned about my 2.2 pump in conjunction with the 2.5 I'm building. He said that you can't use a 2.4 space cam in a 2.2 pump, anyway, because the pumps are different. He didn't think there would be too much of a problem with my motor, as long as I used an E cam to match my E pump. As long as you use an S cam with the S calibrated pump, you should be able to simply richen up the mixture a little, and away you go. If you can score a decent 2.2S with its MFI, you should go for it. -Scott

Thanks for that Scott. I will make some further enquiries with the seller.

Hi John,
I have a 2.4T crank and cam towers/valves from my 2.4, if it would help you.

G'day emptyo, it could well help me, but I'm in Australia and think the freight could be heinous!
If I get the engine I will definitely give you a shout though. Thanks
