GB83SC 10-30-2003 12:22 PM

I think my 83 is going to be right up there (July 1983) built date
XXXXXS122547

The case has the single oil drain plug.

I don't buy it.

That article is a bit off - this is what they say:

"Since 1963, a total of 401,232 air cooled cars have been produced. The last model which was internally assigned to the development number "993", was built 69,137 times in the Zufferhausen works; of these 6,418 were Turbo models. The powerful turbo version was purchased by 32,335 customers from 1997 to March 1998."

I am not sure how 32,335 people could have bought one of the 6,418 993TTs made. I presume they mean that over the entire 911 air cooled run that there were 32,335 911 Turbos made.

July '82
My engine case has some ugliness on top, due to the forms wearing out. It has the drain plug. I suspect mine was one of the last of the the "SC" engine cases.

nostatic 10-30-2003 04:44 PM

Sorry guys, but I don't think the last one is on this board...I believe the SCRS built in '84:

280hp @7K? How cool must that car be..

Although this page indicates '83:

We now return you to "The last SC" programming.......

I'd heard that Seinfeld owned the 2nd last aircooled 993 and the absolute last one went into the Porsche museum...

That is a strange thing, April car with a later number than July.
Does your car have a single oil drain plug in the case?

SpeedracerIndy 10-30-2003 05:05 PM

What's the deal with the single oil drain plug? What else would there be? I thought all SCs have a single oil drain plug in the case. My 81 has the oil drain plug in the sump cover. Is this the one everyone's talking about?

GB83SC 10-30-2003 05:08 PM

No I am not talking about having a drain plug in the sump cover.
My late 83 has no sump cover, just a single bolt to the side of the case.

His April built 170896 is number 0896. The 7 denotes a cabriolet.

So far, I'm your runner up at 122505, with the later style case sans sump plate.

:D

Why did they do away with the sump cover? Is the sump pickup still there, and what about the screen?????

The pickup is still there, but now the screen was attached to it directly. Without the large hole for the sump cover, the case is now slightly stronger, and there is one less place for the motor to leak.

My VIN is WPOZZZ91ZDS140619

the car was first registered in January '83. I am sure the car must have been bulit in '82. How can I know the date of manufacture?

smcdermaid 10-31-2003 07:31 AM

Mine was manufactured 10/82 VIN ************0665. On the early side for an '83 but I since 0670 and 0619 are posting here it's kinda cool that our cars were likely built in the same week or so. Oddly, my cert. of Auth. doesn't show a record of date of manufacture.

Glasgow 911SC 10-31-2003 07:48 AM

Mine was 1st registered in August 82. Like Paco says, how do you tell the build date?

GB83SC 10-31-2003 08:01 AM

The built date is on the drivers side, inside the door jam just above where the lock engages, there should be a factory sticker there,

Perhaps this applies only to US cars...

GB83SC 10-31-2003 09:09 AM

Any more 1983's out there?
