? Replacing rear control arm....

Im going to hopefully be finishing up the front suspension rebuild this weekend and starting on the rear. Im hoping to have all the suspension, all the interior and and the lightweight bodywork upgrades done in time for the Road Atlanta track day 11/23. Its going to be TIGHT....

Im upgrading my '69 911S to aluminum control arms as part of a total suspension upgrade. Im doing the full Smart Racing Products upgrade....

In reading the shop manual instructions, it gets interesting. "If the control arm bolt heads are mounted inboard, remove the engine and transmission. See chapter one"

Hmmmmmmmm. Yep, the bolt heads are mounted inboard on my car. There appears to be no way to remove these bolts without indeed totally removing the entire engine/trans assemble. For perhaps the first time.... I really want to take a gun to some Stuttgart engineer, what totally piss poor design work.

Anyhow... am I just screwed? Is there any neat trick that may help shortcut this? I thought driving the bolt out as much as possible and cutting the head off with a cutoff wheel, then driving the remainder out the other side. If I can get it to come out without having the head to leverage against.... seems to be easier than total engine removal.

This is one upgrade this is a SERIOUS pain! Im getting the aluminum arms ready. This means cleaning them, stripping them all the way down and replacing all bearings etc. One one of them, the castel nut WILL NOT come off and thus the hub cannot be disassembled and the stub axle removed. Ive heated it, banged on it, used a huge breaker bar on it, used the air impact on it, tried combinations of the above and now Im going at it with an air chisel and cutoff wheel. That ****er is a *****!

Anyhow.... any tips appreciated!

Terry

Terry

Cutting the head off should do it.

On the castle nut, if all else fails dremel it off.
