To sell or not to sell! 72S targa project

Some of you may remember a few months back I purchased this 72S as a restore project. Well, anyone who's tackled a project of this magnitude knows what I'm up against.... and well, being a somewhat lazy individual, I'm finding a real lack of motivation. I've torn it down pretty good (that's the easy part) and it's time to start the real work. After spending the last month in the garage every evening and a few weekends it seems like I live there now. It seems like I'm either at work or, well, at work! So, it's gonna have to sit for awhile as I'm sick of it. Maybe in a month or so I'll be ready to tackle it again, but right now I'd probably let it go. Kind of itching for something I can actually drive... maybe a 993 Some encouraging words please!!

My encouraging words of the day: Sell it to me for dirt cheap!

I am sure the completed project will be well worth the effort should you decide to stick with it. My wife even wants an old car to cruise around in! My only requirement is that it go like stink!

Don't give up hope yet. As soon as that sun pops out in spring your gonna be kicking yourself for not being done. Get a nice torpedo heater, some tunes, beverages, and make a plan. Only work 2 days a week on it for only a few hours. One little thing done at a time and it'll get done.

When I restored mine, the first set of painters quit, stole parts, and ruined any progress, and as soon as it got painted a freak car accident (a car started by itself across the way) required new paint on the hood, fenders, decklid etc.. All in all it will cost a grand more than expected but a whole lot more is being saved on labor. I'm still seing imperfections in panel fit and paint flaws but having an early car in the midwest is awesome!!

Hey, the second time around is only practice. Imagine being on the factory assembly line back then....

If you tell all your friends how much fun it is (really build it up) they may decide to get in on the "fun" themselves, and help out. I think this tact has been succesful in the past......

Let it sit until you want to work on it! It's all about having fun. If you have some extra money, buy a driver for the time being. You wouldn't be the first. My dad has a '60 356B he bought in '62. In 1978 he decided to restore it. He took it apart and completed the restoration in 1992! Now 11 years later it still looks like a fresh restoration. He worked on it when he felt like it and did it right.

Good luck, but if you decide to sell, let me know!

I have been there, If you don't have the desire then you are not goin gto do the job or do it correctly.
Move on to something that will give you instant gratification.

Thanks for the encouraging words! To be honest, I'm a bit dissapointed in myself as I have this nasty urge to get a boxster! Made the big mistake of test driving one at the dealership a few week's ago and the urge isn't subsiding with time.

I'm going to try and wait this out a bit and hope I can find something fun to tide me over.

Actually none, which is a good thing cause she's on my bad list right now and I'd probably let it go.

For those who are mildly interested, I'd probably be asking too much, feel free to entertain me though

Mark, I haven't thought seriously about it. I'll be forthcoming about what I have in it though. Paid 7K for it and have spent another $2k in parts. These include a new windshield, sport exhaust, door tops, targa deck, sunvisors, chrome door top strips, door skins, door panels, stainless targa bar, interior targa bar, S rocker panel trim, and some other trim and rubber junk.......... That being said, I'm not willing to take a loss on what I have in it.

I really need to finish this as it's going to be awfully nice and should come in under 15K total (which is great for what will be a nice S). The paint will be done by my father so that's going to save a fair amount and the rest is just misc trim, carpet and some other odd's and end's. Oh, and check out this Leistritz sport muffler!!

KEEP IT!! You will regret it if you move it now. Look at this 72 S Targa http://adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/9/4/36675094.htm
That should help you hang on to it. I drove a friend's Boxter about 3 weeks ago and I was not impressed. It was nice but I thought it would make me grin more. But that's me.

You have the hard part (painting)covered. Its pretty much just your labor and parts from here. I say stay the path and you'll be happy. Good luck!

Nice, Kelly Green

My current thought is that at the rate I'm going, and to do this right, it's going to take a few years to complete. Not sure I want to have that amount of $$ tied up for that long without being able to enjoy it.

Just finished restoring a 69 Ducati and may have jumped the gun on picking up another project.

Slowly starting to realize that I may be a bit too busy to tackle this. Being only 28, single, and dedicated to my career, it seems like I have 5 million things going on and no time to enjoy any of them. Heck, I haven't even had time to join riding buddies on the Duck........that can't be a good thing!!!

Anybody want to take over.... for a small fee of course!

If you have never driven it (from what i gather), then thats your problem. My suggestion is get it running even if you only have one seat and no paint. Then go hit some curves in it. After that your enthusiam will skyrocket to finish it.

I agree that it may be time to bolt things back together so it runs. Once you are driving it you will know if its a keeper or not and it will be alot easier to sell if you decide to sell. I spent a year with my motor out of commission and lost interest in my car. It became the boat anchor in the garage (my wife's words not mine). Anyway its back together now and I'm loving it again.
