Oil thermostat O-ring
Quick question gang, what is the best way to go about replacing this o-ring? I am considering full and partial engine drops, but would really like to Not go to this extreme. Is there any way around it? Thanks,
Brian

If you are refering to the thermostat for the "On the Engine" cooler, then you will need to at least perform a partial drop.

That's the one and unfortunately what I suspected. Thanks for the quick reply, Noel.

I think you'll definitely need to do a partial drop, & remove some of the CIS equip. How badly is it leaking? ie. can you leave it until you need to do the clutch or something & replace then?

It's not terrible and I have a few other leaks to fix. I need to do a valve adjustment and replace leaky valve covers as well. I will probably put it off another few months. The biggest problem seems to be that hard oil line in the back being in the way.

My advice, is to drop it and get it all done at once, I did my 83 and there are a few things that need to move to get to the unit. Also replace the pressure switch next to it.

Thanks, George. I'll have to remember to add that to the list!

I have my engine out to fix the same problem. Even with the engine out I think it would be difficult to remove the thermostat without removing the CIS system.
In this photo of my engine, the thermostat cover is just behind the red "idiot light" sender, which should be replaced at the same time as the thermostat o-ring: ![]() On the bright side - a project like this allows you to get to know your engine better. I'm replacing every seal and piece of rubber I can't normaly reach while the engine is in the car. -Brad

Brad, Thank you so much for the pic. It only reinforces the impossibility of replacing it while still in the car. I will definitely take advantage of the opportunity to replace every other gasket while I'm in there. Maybe I'll even do a little powdercoating of valve covers, fan, and shroud! What a great excuse to make my motor look AWESOME!

I see this as another chance to show off my engine. Here is an '83 engine with backdated heat, no A/A and powder coated fan, fan housing, chain housings and covers and valve covers. She's a looker!

You can remove the air filter cover\filter and the CIS "boot" and get at the thermostat if you are flexible enough.
Put a little corning 111 on the new O-ring to lubricate and replace the spring washers as needed. (HINT: those washers under it are supposed to curved, not flat) AFJuvat

Brian, bring it by some weekend this winter and we will knock it out. I just bought a powder coater and am looking for an oven to bake it with. We can experiment on your stuff !

OH BOY! I'll probably do the drop at my house, but I wouldn't mind powdercoating at yours! Do you or your buddies have a cabinet to bead blast parts in? I have a friend of a friend who also does powdercoating in town, but I need to prep the parts myself.
AFJuvat, you must have a lot more joints than me. I took all that stuff off, and still can't get a clean shot around the oil line.
