Question Engine Miss Help

Hi Gang,

I did the diagnostics that a few of you suggested but the car continues to missfire. The miss seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine. If I remove the plug wires systematically, only the driver's side wire removal appears to affect the idle quality. I have checked the passenger side wires for resistance and they all measured 6 OHMs. I changed the spark plugs to known good ones, and still the engine idles roughly and misses. The number five plug was wet when I pulled it, but then found number four wet later. If I rev the engine it smooths out past about half throttle but as soon as movement of the throttle stops, the engine begins to miss again. I am not saying that it runs normally as throttle opens, just better. The engine was running fine Thursday night when I parked it in the garage. Friday morning, all of this began.

I checked the injectors for flow and all seemed normal. I have put two bottles of Techron in the tank and run it on hwy to remove deposits. No improvement.

Any ideas? Thanks,
Troy

idle

Change the intake manifold gaskets, and probably the intake boots.

Thanks Otto,
The motor is completely rebuilt last summer. The engine ran great one day and literally ran terrible the next morning, "missing". I replaced a bad injector o-ring but the car continues to miss. The carb cleaner test revealed no vacuum leaks.

JTO,

You mean 6K, or 6000 Ohms, right?

Are the ignition wires factory, or aftermarket?

Are you saying only removing spark plug wires 1 - 3 ... has any effect on idle?

I've been wondering what is a good baseline for replacing OEM ignition wires? My SC wires do arc a little in places & I mean only slightly. I've read threads of people describing a light show at night- mine is noticeable if I look carefully but not spectacular. Does this mean they should be replaced?
thanks

Warren,
It appears that the driver's side of the engine is getting good spark based on the fact that when I pulled the plug wires from this side, systematically, the engine idle dropped and the engine nearly died. When I did this test on the passenger's side, the rough idle did not change. In other words, it appears that the passenger side is getting intermitant spark. I also felt that the arc from the spark plug connector was weak and I could only get one or two arcs to jump to ground. On the driver's side, the spark would jump an inch.

Thanks,
Troy
