Condensation on fuel and temp guage

1983 911 SC

When the weather is humid, condensation fogs the inner glass surface of the fuel and temp guages. It doesn't affect the speedo nor the clock guage. Anyone experience this and any help on trying to reduce or prevent condensation? I placed wall insulator materials behind the guages but no help.

Doug

I don't know the answer, but I can tell you that it very guage specific. I just replaced my temp/druck press guage last week and the new one fogs up around the edges in the morning. My other guages and the old temp guage are fine

It's a case of differing temps inside versus outside the gauge. All the sealing you can do only reinforces the differential.

You might try grabbing a bunch of the anti-humidity packets you (used to?) find in shoe boxes and the like. These, placed in proximity to the gauge's most-open hole *might* help. You might even be able to shoe one in through a bulb hole, but I'm not advocating that you do!

Really, folks like you and I are just going to have to remove the plastic face and clean the inside with anti-static, anti-fog and see if that fixes things. I think that, in terms of condensation, it is much like rust and cannot be avoided.

Yes, my gauge face look like above. When I open the gauge, it was actually yellow glue that coated the lens. I think the glue was evaporated due to high temperature. I had to use gasoline to clean it all out. It just happened in one of the gauge.

It happens to mine (70) every time it rains, is very humid, or I wash the car. It's a humidity thing. Once the car is in the sun for a while it goes away and does no damage. Can't say I have tried to fix it. Not sure it's worth all the work.

Thought it was just a Targa thing. Mine does the same. If I turn on the defrost it clears it out pretty quick.

The one I would like to fix but haven't figured out just yet is the Tach. When the car sits in the sun the plastic lense on the tach warps and causes the needle to hang up. Again turning on the fan will move enough air to un warp it but annoying none the less

My car is a coupe and has the same problem. Only on the oil temp/fuel gague. It only happens when it's very humid out. I also don't feel it's worth the trouble or the potential of damaging the gagues to repair it.

I have an Targa that does the same thing and a guy I work with has a 76 Coupe that does it too. This is too many different types to be model specific. I wonder if their is an AC duct or an air in leak that does it.

The gauges towards the left hand side do this on most 911s. It's very common.

I have seen it in my past 911's (74, 79 and now 73.5). Its guage specific and its exclusively Porsche. I have never seen it in Lucas instruments, only the VDO 911 Fuel/Oil guage.

I dispell this as an exclusive Porsche characteristic that is a way to make you 911 even more unique!! ......If it does not fog on certain days, I GET WORRIED!!

We should gather a list of these funky 911 items.
