Pelican Parts Voltage Regulator, external (for Marchal 55W Alternator), 911 (1975-81)

Hello,

I am replacing the Voltage Regulator on my 79 911SC and installing a rebuilt Marchal Alternator...

The old VR is a SEV Marchal 14V, black...
The Pelican Parts replacement part for this is described
as Voltage Regulator, external (for Marchal 55W Alternator), 911/911 Turbo (1975-81).....

The part looks different than the original SEV Machal black one, although the mounting holes and plug connection seems to be the same..

Anyone out there install one of these yet ???

I am beginning to wonder if this is the correct part...
The price is half that of the VR at other places also...

Any help would be appreciated....

Also, is there any harm done in removing the noise suppressor ???

Thanks....

The difference is probably because the new one is solid state and the old one was electro-mechanical (new one smaller, old one bigger), that's what I found when I replaced mine a couple years ago. I don't know much about the noise suppressor, it appears it's only used with the external regulator, I left mine in place. Why remove it?

Hi Jerry,
I think your talking about the stock noise suppressor?
The unit is wired In Line with the D+, DF, and D-. It could cause a charge problem.. Not much info is around about it.. but if a charging problem and alt and external reg check out OK I would then suspect the suppressor. I'm not sure how useful it is anyway, except being a problem waiting to happen? ......Ron

Bill,

Your alternator should be a 70 Amp, not a 55 Amp. The 70 Amp were installed in late 1975 models, and onwards. The regulator should have a Gray case.

FWIW ... neither of the Pelican pics are correct for the external Marchal regulators! The Gray one is a replacement 'electronic' regulator for '69 thru '73 Marchal's with screw/lug wiring. The other one isn't a Marchal regulator at all! The electronic 70 Amp regulator is the same exact size & style as your Black one, but with a Gray case!

I was having voltage spikes and swapped out my original VR with the one you list. It didn't totally solve the problem (loose wire elsewhere), but it seems to work fine. It is smaller than the older one, but mounted up fine. I kept the external noise supressor.

The noise suppressor blocks (in-line to regulator) have been known to be
intermittent (open to alternator) causing a no-charge condition. So, leave
them off, if noise is not a problem.

Also, the grey regulators become intermittent and cause the alternator to
over-charge. The original black ones are the most reliable.
