2.7 US Carerra CIS to ROW MFI

All this reading about "converting CIS to Carbs" and cam changes, etc. got me thinking...

I really haven't had the time to play much with the Carrera, but I know that time is coming, so I want to be prepared for it. I also know that while there's nothing wrong with it right now, I'll shortly want to paint it, and of course that will lead to...

So I'm beginning to research all different things I could do. My gut feeling is to keep it stock, as they only made 246 of these that year. But it's good to plan. I was thinking something that may be really neat is to change it from a simple S engine to a ROW Carerra engine, with Mechanical Fuel Injection, and anything else I'd need.

Does anyone know exactly which parts I'd have to switch out?

Other option is to build the S engine to make the 200 HP the MFI engine made... that might take a little creativity with the CIS and stock displacement, but it can be done.

I have a 2.7 with 9.5:1 JE pistons, S cams and MFI. It's a really nice engine and has great low down torque. It's not peaky at all. Not sure all the parts you need. Probably MFI from a 73, new pistons adn maybe Mahle cylinders depending on what you've got. JE pistons and a set of s cams which I think you have. I'm upgrading my oil pump to 993/964 as well for good measure.

Unless you have deep pockets, I would sugggest that you do ALL the mechanical work first and then think about cosmetics like painting. These things can be more pricey than you think.

You could also drop in a 3.2 but it wouldn't be the same.

As I understand it, You will need a full MFI setup, have the pump rebuilt to 2.7 specs, have the heads machined to enlarge the ports. I believe the MFI injectors are in the heads, so there would be extra machining to make them fit. You would need to replace your pistons with the RS-type with deep valve pockets, plus the cams. I believe the left camshaft is different, because of the drive for the MFI pump on the back. One of the heat exchangers is different as well.

Webers/PMOs would be a simpler, more cost effictive way to reach the same performance goal, but you would still need the cams/pistons/head work.
