Gearbox bell crank? Drop the engine/gearbox a little (I'm pretty sure).

you gotta be kidding, right? is there any other way?

Noah, here's the bell crank I'm talking about (in red):

it's next to the trans. (rotates on a shaft) and is part of the acc. linkage setup.

Garage
Is the trailing arm in the way when the wheels are on the ground or just when the car is jacked up?

You have to remove the sway bar and drop link on that side I believe. I made the mistake of installing the throttle linkage on the tranny (I assume that is what you are talking about) backwards and had to remove the sway bar to remove it and swap it. Car was jacked up in this case.

EDIT: Nevermind that, I dropped the engine a few inches to get that out of there.

so that's the trailing arm it's hitting?

the car is jacked up.

Now that I think about it I did drop my engine and tranny a few inches. I didn't have to unhook anything on the engine, just unscrewed the mounts and lowered it just enough to get it out of there.

Hi ,

actually its much easier then that...

Once you slide the bell crank off the shaft most of the way , like it is in your picture , you can just use a pair of vice grips and a rag , and clamp the shaft the bell crank rides on and unscrew it from the trans .. only takes a minute , and a hell of a lot quicker then lowerign the motor for clearance ....

Take care - Joe -

How about gently lifting the LR tire with a floor jack(assuming car is safely on jackstands) to elevate the trailing arm?

thanks for your replies.

Joe's method worked the best (thank you, this board is the best)
with the shaft out from the transmission, i was able to clean it up, polish it, etc. something that would've been a lot more difficult lying on my back under the car.

anyway, everything is back together and done.

however, when i was driving the car down the ramps, i noticed that the Accelerator pedal felt A LOT lighter!!!!

i checked and double checked everything. is this normal?

i mean A LOT LIGHTER THAN BEFORE!

Yes ,

You would notice a big difference , if the bell crank was not loose on the shaft before , what happens is the nylon bushings in the bell crank expand and grab the shaft over time , once you clean the shaft and get the crud off it the bell crank should 'freely' spin on the shaft .. all the above would also cause the motor not to return to idle unless you put big return springs on carbs or throttle body.

You can also check the throttle swing plate that mounts on the side of the petal cluster , as those tend to get bound up too for the same reason. It should freely move.

Take care - Joe -
