S calipers on Carrera rotors

The discussion the last few days has jogged my fading memory, i thought that i remembered that the mods to put S calipers on Carrera rotors was symmetic wrt the caliper, sooo imade a few phone calls to guys that I thought I remembered had done this and eureka.

From the horses mouth, only 2 things need to be done

first - 1 mm machined from the pad faces or use the thinnest stock pad you can find for instance Pagid S pads are 19mm thick & A are 15mm, Porsche spec is 13mm and 10mm respectively, each manufacturer has a slighly different spec

and

second - 1mm machined from each throat face

Bill,

A little off topic, but I remember something about modifying 993 rear calipers to accepts 993TT rear rotors. I've got an early car with 3.2 carrera rear calipers on stock carrera rear rotors. Instead of just replacing the rotors out I figured I'd upgrade to 28mm rear rotors. I think I remember you having a description of this some place, but I can't seem to find it...

The throat needs to be opened up a bit w/ a grinder to accept a 28mm rotor. You can avoid this issue by using 965 rear calipers.

But not a 993tt rotor. You would want a 930 rotor(309x28).

The other issue is the mounts. The best way to do it is to machine off the ears , converting them to radial mount, VCI can do this for you but it isn't cheap. A less expensive alternative is to weld the existing mounting holes up, and redrill w/ the properly positioned 3" o-c holes.

Thx for posting this.

But - other than a bit of wt. savings - is there any reason to do this?

Some people like a challange or doing things a bit differently.

If it were my ride I would use Carrera calipers and rotors

then it's because of heat only?

and not havingng 930 experience, I figure their larger discs and pads would provide a stronger stopping regardless of heat, huh Bill? jake brakes set to high work great.

Yes,

When you get to 930 and 993tt brakes you get even more heat capacity and more brake torque because of the larger radius of the rotors but you also need bigger wheels and bigger, stickier tires to utilize the additional brake torque.

When upgrading always consider the entire system and ultimate usage.
