What a PITA...

Thanks to the PP Search, I knew what I was in for ahead of time, but still, what a PITA.

Pulled the starter motor from my G50-equipped '88 today. I tried for 45 minutes without doing a partial drop, then bit the bullet and decided to lower the engine a bit. 20 minutes later it was out. Still, much tougher than doing it with a 915 car.

I don't know why I still think there will be shortcuts, but I still spend lots of time trying to find them.

There is a really ingenious solution to that problem but I don't have room to write it in the margin.
(Sorry, mathematics joke.)

"It is impossible for a cube to be written as a sum of two cube, or a fourth power to be written as a sum of two fourth powers or, in general, for any number which is a power greater than the second to be written as a sum of two like powers... I have a truly marvelous demonstration of this proposition which this margin is too narrow to contain."

I don't know how much space you need Chris, but here is some - please do tell me the secret!

Good, now maybe one of you brainiacs can explain to me how a conditionally convergent series can be made to converge on any desired value.

Yeah, yeah, Riemann series theorem etc. But this non-math major who hasn't done anything but write code in 10 years doesn't get it.

influencing such powers demands thinking in 6 dimensional space

"String Theory" requires thinking in terms of 11 dimensions ... which is no big deal ... when used to dealing with APL arrays which are limited to merely 128 dimensions!

Do what the previous owner or garage did with my brothers 87.....lift the carpeting over the tunnel between the rear seats, cut 3 sides of a square out of the sheet metal and bend back the tab to get a socket in there. Then when done, just bend the metal back and recover with carpeting. (It's always interesting finding out the mucked up work previous people have done on a used car!)

So, from math to APL -- don't see APL much anymore. Anybody want my hp Series 80 ROM that enables APL commands on those machines?

Here's my best math quote:

"Georg Cantor went insane from thinking about the real line."

Um...wow.

That's an approach I must admit I didn't even consider. Hope you found a way to seal up that area

Actually, most everything on these cars is a PITA compared iwth say a BMW sedan -- or at least my old 2002. These things are more or less exotic cars, rather than just sports cars. The starter is esp. nasty tho.

Outside of the pure butchery of it, putting in an access hole is sort of intriguing. Dremel a port, fabricate a cover, cut a rubber seal to fit, primer/paint, maybe spray with undercoating when done ....
Nah - probably quicker to do the partial drop and I like the challenge of prevailing over these engineering oversights the old fashioned (correct) way. Maybe I'll feel differently when my starter expires.
