Another clunking rear suspension (Not CV's)
 

I have a constant clunk in the rear of my 70 911"S" when I hit bumps or come off the curb of my driveway. The CV's have been replaced. Details are that the car has aftermarket sway bars and Koni red shocks. If the car is on flat ground, I can shake itfrom side to side and hear the clunk.....any ideas? WOuld a bad wheel bearing cause this? Bad shock? Thanks in advance.

I am told a deteriorated bushing at the bottom of Konis will do that.

My Konis use Heim joints, but I havent had them off to check them

Have you check your sway bar mounts?

Dave, could it be bushings? My car has the old 1970's teflon bushings, and they are getting very noisy. Saving my pennies & dimes to have the suspension gone through, bushings all replaced (possibly neatrix?), and corner weighing.

so why don't you have a friend shake and you look?

I used to have a clunk in the rear of my '73. Replacing all the bushings (except the swaybar to body ones) got rid of the the clunking. My spring plate bushings were completely shot and replaced with a set of Neatrix bushings. One of my swaybar to body was a little loose so rather than pay $35 for that one bushing, I wrapped a little tape around the bushing to get rid of any play. I am not sure how long that will hold up as I haven't put many miles on my car.

Lastly, after you replace your bushings, you won't believe how much better you car will handle.

My car was making no noise when I bought it four years ago at 135k miles. Now, it clunks in the rear when going over bumps, and the clunking is (I'm pretty sure) the worn spring plate bushings. That's my guess on your car too. You might want to just jack it up, get under there and shake things. If you're wondering what suspension pieces should feel loose and which ones should not, ther's a simple answer to that. Nothing should be loose. Looseness causes clunking.

I cant really get my head under the car with it on the ground :rolleyes: Besides, I have no friends ;)

sway bar hitting the tranny case?

Could wheel bearings cause this?

My '72 did the same thing. It turned out to be the outside cover plates on the rear spring plate bushings. They were worn and slightly flattened and the plate bunped against the top of the spline tube of the spring plate. You probably need to replace the rear bushings.

I also have a clunk and after a bit of poking around I'm sure it's the rear wheel bearing. If it's been loaded up in one direction eg turning right, and I then make a sharp left (& vice versa) I get a clunk from the right rear wheel only. Another job for the winter...

I doubt it. If they have a small amount of play they're very noisy at speed. The car would be undrivable if they ever had enough play to cause a "clunk."

I second poking your head under there while someone else pushes it from the side.

Check all the bolts on the swing plates etc. I once had a guy leave off a bolt or left it loose after aligning.
I thought I was lossing my mind until I found it.

Sounds like broken sway-bar mounts to me. If they have not been reinforced.... its not if they will break but when.
