Early 911- carbed engine drop height

Hi,

I will probably be dropping the engine out of my '73 911 tomorrow. I removed the entire rear bumper assembly and have about 31" of clearance in the back. Is that enough to drop a webered 911 engine? It looks like I should have plenty of space to spare.

If I am dropping the engine and transmission together, I don't have to disconnect the starter or reverse lights, right?

Lastly, once I remove the engine, where should I place the jack to raise the car off the jack stands to lower the car back on the ground?

Thanks

Dont forget to remove the+ Battery cable at the starter, Use a 2x4 block on the jack and raise the car at the cross member just below the hole where the input shaft goes through firewall. You should have plenty of clearence depending on the height of your jack. If not just remove the carbs (12 nuts) I believe you do remove the 2 plug wire at the reverse light switch

Thanks Minkoff.

I was under the car and noticed the + battery cable and disconnected it. I helped a friend drop the engine out of his '73 and IIRC, we cut the reverse wires and then once we got the engine out realized that we didn't need to bother with it. Perhaps the reverse wire needs to be pulled if you just drop the engine without the tranny?

Are you removing the transaxle and engine as a unit? I recommend it

Yes, pulling the tranny and engine as a unit. IIRC, the reverse light wiring is part of the main engine wiring harness... so I guess I don't need to bother with it.

Remove the intake system, the top shroud and fan/alternator assy. with the engine in place, then your height requirements are very modest. Same with installation.

It's easier to R&R the drivetrain if the front and rear end are fairly level. This way, the removal motion is merely straight back (to clear the shift rod from the tunnel) and down. If you first remove the top end parts as described, the entire car doesn't have to be as high.

However, this is not practical if the induction stays on. Thus, many people raise the rear end very high which places more importance on the jack and holding mechanism to maintain that angle while also trying to clear the shift rod.

Regarding removing the battery cable. As Minkoff suggests, don't forget to remove it from the starter (the solenoid wires too). However, don't forget to disconnect the battery from the system .... at the battery (ground cable) before you begin this job. Just want to make sure.
