So I guess the question for the 84-86 cars is if it was a California car or Japan the brown wire would be connected? If not it comes disconnected?
I put in your chip Steve but did not check for the jumpered brown wire, I assume my car that lived on the east coast all of it's life would have this disconnected. Dyno runs of all of these combos you spoke of in another thread would be helpful but I know that time is expensive. -Jeff nolift911@hotmail.com |

The wires are right in front of the harness, you should see them after you flip back the carpet covering. Two somewhat thin brown wires connected by plastic white connectors. CA/Japan cars have them. You should see a performance gain with SteveW chip even if you have not disconnected the wiring. If the wiring was the only trick, we wouldn't need to buy SteveWs chip. :) |
there's a brown wire which has a connector on it. The wire runs along the main cable that goes to the connector on the DME. Disconnect this connector and see what happens.
It might be that the jumper wire is already disconnected on your car. / Johan |

I located the brown wire in question on my '88 (CA model) Would I be wise to dis-connect it? Should I see a difference? I always thought the car was a little weak off idle.

Code7, the only 993 chips I developed are for the '95s. 96s are unchippable, and the 97-98s are a pain to hack with OBD-II. So if a 95 is what you have, email me and we can set something up.

Si if I'm running a euro premuffler and I connect the brown wires will it improve my emissions ...for testing purposes?

zzwhm - it should. It's what I usually do as part of my routine just to make sure my emissions will be way below test limits. Never failed to pass all these years. But then I also put a cat back on too.

I have been told a well tuned 87 will pass here in TX even with a euro premuffler. I'll connect the brown wires and be a CA car for a day if it'll give a little extra margin. Your chip is on my Xmas list.

I have gotten a Euro 3.2, with headers, performance chip and no cat through emissions in TX. However we had to (temporarily) pull the Euro DME out and put in a US stock DME to do it.

The two brown wires do the following:
1. Pin 10 to the DME affects the timing for lower NOX and/or octane, open advances the timing 2. Pin 28 to the DME affects the mixture by bypassing the altitude sensor, open richens the mixture So by using these two jumpers you can basically get a performance gain without buying one of the so called performance chips. If you are seriously considering wasting money on a performance chip, have the supplier provide dyno data which should be available if the performance chip was developed properly; i.e. maps must be determined using a dyno to maximize the torque for all loads & RPMs and to avoid pinging & detonation. Properly developing fuel and ignition maps is NOT a simple effort that can be done using a PC. Just "winging it" by offsetting map numbers without dyno testing can cause problems; e.g. pinging, detonation, emissions failures, and damaged cats. I really notice a strong power surge where there used to be none - between 3-4K RPM. It really kicks in at about 4K RPM BTW, this is for a ROW car with a Dansk pre-muff. Keep up the good work Steve! Get em while they are hot - Steve has posted a price increase soon...... |
With all respect Loren, are you here to spam us here with your website again? The pin 10 connector is already disconnected on the 49 state cars, as they are only connected for the California and Japanese versions for the U.S spec 930/25 motors. 90% of the guys running chips that I know are outside of California, and still get a dramatic improvement in power, response, and fuel economy.
Though you might think, richening the mixture everywhere does NOT increase power. It can increase throttle response in certain regions of the power curve, making you think its faster, but it will loose power in others. My dyno testing on an otherwise stock U.S. 89 Carrera has shown an 8.4 hp loss with a 5% richer mix. In addition, running richer everywhere will only decrease fuel efficiency, increase overall emissions, cause excess fuel wash into the motor and valve guides, dilute the motor oil, and overtax the cat and O2 sensor - but we've been through this already. You can play games now, or pay up later. This is why specific fuel curves are set up for each owner's configuration, from stock with a cat, to modified with headers and megaphones, cams, etc. Some of my customers have reported that they just passed California emissions testing, no problem, and some have actually realized a 50 mile per tank increase in fuel economy on their highway mileage. Try doing all that by playing with the sensors. |
