Homemade RS carpet

I ripped all of the carpet out of the back of the 911 a few weeks ago in a fit of pique over not being to find one of my nuts... for the camera mount.

The noise was unbearable, even with a helmet on, so I had to put something back there.

First I cleaned out all of the glue schmeg with a die grinder and scotchbrite pad. Then I painted it all a nice flat black and let it dry a few days.

Then I installed pieces of adhesive-backed asphalt-based mastic sound insulation, which is similar to the OEM stuff but much, much thinner. The trick to getting this stuff to stay on is to mold it with a heat gun.

Then last night I dropped $25 on some darg gray indoor/outdoor carpet and Liquid Nails. The sample piece of carpet they had was a nice very dark gray or a light black, but all they had was the sorta-dark gray. Oh well.

I need to take the roll bar out to finish things up - it's too difficult to try and work back there with it in the way. I'm going to Thunderhill this weekend, so I'll finish the carpet next week.

So far I'm enjoying a very nice drop in engine noise, and it's worth the 3 or 4 lb wight penalty.

Looks nice, but I think you might regret using liquid nails.

I used it on my 914 for trunk carpet.

Just wait 'til you have to remove the carpet.

Looks great, I did a similar thing except I used the piece of carpet that lays over the back seats when they are down, trimmed it a little and glued it in. Matches the rest of my carpet.

I might suggest using aerosol spray glue for the rest. It sticks the carpet down fine but if you need to get it out you can pull it out. The liquid nails might never come out??

The charcoal gray looks fine. And I'm sure the next import-girl will appreciate the noise reduction.

I'm a fan of using minimal adhesive on carpets. It really takes VERY little to keep things in place.

I've used different spray adhesives up to and including 3M Super 90, and didn't have good luck with long-term adhesion. Getting the Liquid Nails off can't be any worse than getting the factory crap off.

Yes, I did find the nut.

Who wants their carpet to shift under 5G lateral forces?

My carpet is loose EVERYWHERE. I'm putting in new pieces now. I'm probably going for liquid nails too.

I used a combination of 3M Super77 and industrial strength velcro for mine. Pieces that I need to be able to get off easily are held on with velcro, the rest are Super77.
