wheels

Could someone explain the history and evolution of the wheels. I have cup wheels 17*7 and 9's on my car. I like them but I think I would like to get another set at some point Everyone loves the fuchs. Why? Are they better than cookie cutters structurally or is it purely asthetics? Were cookies an option or were fuchs. I see 15's have little value and 16 are gold. What about 16" cookies? Are they like 15" fuchs pricewise?
I wouldn't mind 16" cookies as a second set if the price is that much cheaper. Polished Cookies can't be all that bad are they? What is a fair price for fuchs vs. cookies? I guess 7 and 8's? or is it 6 and 8"s?

Fuchs are forged alloy, which makes them among the lightest and strongest of all alloy wheels designed for 911s.

Nearly all other wheels are cast alloy, which will break under stress, rather than bend like a Fuchs will.

I don't think they ever made cookie cutters in 16 inch.

The Cup1 wheels were first seen on the 965 or 964 Turbo if you like The 964 RS also had them although the RS cups are magnesium.

My cups are Italian replicas. I don't know what their made of. Look like Mag or aluminum. So how much do a nice set of 16" Fuchs go for? and what is with the separate pieces? 79 SC's came with 16"/ 6" and 7"?
And how much do a nice set of 15" Cookie's go for?
I guess getting 15" cookie's instead of 15" fuchs doesn't make any sense does it...
My thoughts are not for a set of track wheels as much as being able to switch them out for refurbishment right now. To refurb the wheels I have in my own good time without having my car off the road. Is that a ridiculous idea?

Cookies were only made in 6x15 and 7x15, never a 16". Since Fuchs were forged from primarily magnesium, they are much lighter than most other wheels. This contributes to their desirability. Cookie cutters and Phone dials weigh as much as 50% more than the comparable Fuchs.
Cookies, Fuchs, phone dials, etc., I think they were all optional, there wasn't a standard wheel. Some countries got different wheels than others, it depends on how the importer ordered them.
I sold a pair of nice 7x16 Fuchs last spring for $300. I saw a pair of 7x16 and 8x16 Fuchs at the Pomona swap meet for $800 last Jan. Cookies don't even come close to the prices of Fuchs.

Fuchs are better than dials which are better than cookies.

I don't know about cookies but phone dials are NOT 50% heavier than Fuchs. A 16x8 Fuchs weighs about 18 lbs. I weighed my 86 951 16x8 at about 20.5 lbs.

If you're just looking for a temp. set of wheels then 15's would do just fine. Cheaper all the way around (wheels and tires). 15 in. Fuchs would be excellent track wheels to start out as well. Good widths (7 front, 8 rear) and tires are cheaper. Although the 15 in. street tires are a little harder to come by, the R-compound seem to have a better size selection.

I had a set of those Italian Cups. They're junk IMO. Get rid of them. They are SUPER heavy and not strong. Three of the four wheels I had when I bought my car were bent quite well.

Another benefit of the phone dials is that they have increased caliper overhang clearance at the hub compared to either the cookie cutters or Fuchs (except the 9x16" Turbo Fuchs and 8x16" 951 Fuchs). The early phone dial 7x15" rim with 23.3mm offset is the only 15" rim I can fit over 930 brakes without a spacer. If you have stock brakes, that is not a consideration.

If all you want is a spare set of wheels for occasional use, then a cheap set of 15" cookies or phone dials make sense, as they can be had as cheap as $200 a set. The 7" and 9" x 16" Fuchs are certainly superior, but will cost you $1200-2000 depending on condition. A set of 7" and 8" by 15" Fuchs will run $6-900, depending.

Mike, you put cookie cutters on my little girl and I will come over there and whomp you with a piece of spagetti...

Nah... get whatever you want.
I'd go with a set of Fuchs.
Those C2 wheels are just fine for daily use. It's on the track and on pitted roads where you "may" run into a problem.

I found a chart that lists an 8x16 Fuchs at 16lbs. That makes your phone dials more than 25% heavier. Until you find the exact weights of Cookie cutters and compare to Fuchs, I stand by my statement.

Mike,

I swapped my cookies (6x15 and 7x15) for a set of 16 inch fuchs. Don't want to sell the cookies but they are just sitting in my garage if you are looking for a spare set of rims temporarily during your refurb. (no tires though). I'm semi local if you are interested.

Thank you for the offer timz. I'm still trying to develop a game plan. I think I would like to have 16" fuchs 7"and 9". The ones for sale, thanks Lee, look nice but the white centers are not going to work. I actually like the polished ones. I have time to see if something comes up. I'd like to either get them needing a refinish or already polished. I'd prefer to save the money and do the work myself. Right now the money is a little tight anyway so I have until I wear my tires out to make a decision.
