Yes in 1972 cars had an external oil filler on the rear panel.
This was replaced in 73 with the oil filler being in the engine compartment (as previously to 1972) as many people were mistaking it for the fuel tank.

I think the question is in regard to the material used for making the flap, i.e. aluminum.
You know I've had two 72' cars and I just assumed they were steel. I've still got my 72' Coupe so I'll have to double check tomorrow but I'm pretty sure it's steel.

I thought so too, but now that i removed the paint, it showed up to be aluminium, tested it with magnet too.

Both of mine (2 cars) are non magnetic. I had always assumed they are some kind of pot metal like the turn signal bodies.

I don't believe it is aluminum. I think wevoid is right in believing that it is pot metal.

I stripped mine down when I painted it. I do not think its aluminum-too heavy. I think it is some form of pot metal like stated above

I tend to agree, tho mine has never been stripped for painting. My thinking is that if it were aluminum, then it wouldn't be as thick as it is.
