I am putting a 2.7L fan on my 3.6 for that very same reason. Someone is going backwards here and its not me.

Fan noise and painful harmonics are not the same thing, guys. But thanks for the insightful posts just telling me to man up.

Go buy a Honda. They are soulless and make little noise.

No, you cannot fit the fan without serious modification. Even then, it will not work as well as the fan you already have.

Maybe I'd prefer to hear a slightly different more soothing sound than what I consider an irritating whine.

I wonder if the fan sold for VW beetles here would fit?

Please do not do ANYTHING to your engine. Sell the car.

kjchristopher,

There are many later threads (too many for me to link in my current situation) discussing this subject.
More ”Search” is warranted.

With your 911SC and being in SoCal, you should consider every possible increase in engine cooling.
PAG unfortunately reduced the sensitivity of your '82 (and only a bit less with my ’79) temperature gauge.
If you want to know the real temperatures, get an IR temp gauge (inexpensive HF work OK) and a Type K thermocouple (Radio Shack, Amazon) for accurate head, oil, etc. measurements.
Real engine (not just oil after cooling) numbers will get your attention.

Turning your fan faster may eliminate your noise concern and improve cooling.
This requires a simple change in crank pulley diameter.

If you don’t want your 911 to sound like a real Porsche, get a Toyota Camry (I have one in addition to a number of 6-cylinder, air-cooled toys).

My 'daily' '79SC (3.2MM, 9.8:1) is a bit mechanically noisy and I tend to drive in the 3-4500 range on the street.
Thursday, on my way home from 'too-many-docs', a youngster in a (impolite description deleted) showed off in an adjacent lane. I slowed. He accelerated dodging through traffic. I passed him later, while he was in discussion with three Arapahoe County Sheriff's Deputies.

Best,
Grady

Add more/better sound insulation in the cabin area. Makes a difference. Much cheaper and might be more effective.

While I certainly disagree with your approach...we are all here to help.

The 964 /993 fan is a deeper unit due to its large alternator. It has nearly the same diameter, but the first thing you will need is a better oil cooling system and a custom cooling shroud. This doesn't even address how your induction system will clear and mount onto this combo, and sorry I can't help there.

to each his own

Thanks. Real temperatures here aren't that bad. Perhaps due to the fact that we rarely see over 80 degrees and are usually in the 60s-70s.

Have you driven a 3.6? Just hate for you to go to this trouble if its still not your desire. You could always swap the whole thing and then no one would give you cr*p :D

I'm going the opposite direction.
My 993 Vram engine lacks enough fan noise for my liking.
So I'm replacing the stock fan with one from a 964 turbo to regain that glorious high pitched fan whine my 73 had before I did the big block engine transplant.
An additioal benefit, I'll get increased cooling air flow in the process.
Bonus!
