3.6 fan on a 3.2 ?

Getting a little tired of that whir from my fan and was wondering if you could reofit a late fan to tone things down.

Anyone know what it would take partswise and if the diameters are the same as my fan housing?

Cheers,

Joe

The newer fan , with its curved blades...not only is quieter...but pushes about 2/3-3/4 the air of the original. Beware.

Diameters(for one thing) are different.

"Getting a little tired of that whir from my fan"
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm..... that's what i like about my 911.

The housing on the new fan (964 type) will physically fit in the same location (on a 930 type case). The locating pin, housing outer diameter and housing depth are the same. The fan itself is larger (255mm vs 245mm old style). Dont know why the new version would flow less, the blade design appears to be more efficient and the stator mounted behind the fan is vastly improved. Didnt Porsche use the same fan on the late turbo's ?. If there were any heat issues, this is where the problem would really show up. Keep in mind the duel pulley and it's offset will require some thought.

The newer fans do flow less that the older fans 1010 l/s @ 6100 964/993 vs 1500l/s @ 6000 for a representative '82-'83 SC

They are more efficient and are sufficient for the task. The design was for quietness not flow efficiencey, much like the helical cut transmisssion gears which are designed for quiteness not power transmission efficiency.

993RS flows even less.

This would lead me to believe they require less HP to drive.

Or less of a parisitic effect...

Pulley ratio would obviously affect flow. Does anyone know what ratio the 964 fan uses ? One could use a Turbo pulley (1.67 to 1) to speed the fan up (assuming the 964 has a lower ratio).

964 n/a ratio is 1.6, 993 is the same.

I wonder if I could use my 3.2 crankshaft pully, lock up the fan/alternator pullies together and use my two belts?

Just had a thought...why not put the belt on the smaller fan pully instead of the big one to regain cfm?

There is a guy selling a kit in the big Porshce Mags. Its expensive!! Sorry dont remember the name of the comapany.

Wil Ferch 11-20-2003 08:04 AM

Again...why?
If it's only noise, and if you're in an *experimenting* mood..take your old fan and reshape the leading edges into pseudo "curve" shape...that's what makes the fan more quiet... but again, why?

Maybe simply work on better grade sound deadening on the firewall, and leave the fan alone ??

Maybe I'd prefer to hear a slightly different more soothing sound than what I consider an irritating whine.

I wonder if the fan sold for VW beetles here would fit?

The fan noise is part of the 911s personality.

stlrj 11-20-2003 09:46 AM

I realize that the fan noise is part of the 911s personality, but so is the exhaust sound which can be changed to suite your taste.

So what's wrong with changing the sound of the fan to something more soothing?

Am I breaking a rule here?

Joe

RickM 11-20-2003 09:54 AM

We usually change the exhaust so it's louder. :)

Rules are made to be broken...and at minimum we learned something about the flow characteristics of 911 fans.

masraum 11-20-2003 10:12 AM

stlrj, you're just wrong, quit fighting it and learn to live with and love your fan noise! ;) jk

There are several different fans and pulley sizes, if the late model fans end up being to expensive maybe you could experiment with some of the others. As a last resort you could also get a louder muffler. :D

Wil Ferch 11-20-2003 11:20 AM

OK... one approach that *may* work ..
is simply swapping one fan for an identical one form another car. Often there are specific "harmonics" ( a drone or a hum) that can be changed when doing this.
It might be all you need....

Found this thread and a few others using the search button. I seem to have plenty of headroom on temps and would like to try the later fan in my 1982 SC. I daily drive my car, minimum of 50 miles a day, and the harmonics between 2200 and 2500rpm drive me nuts. Physically painful.

If I read the other threads correctly, and they are to be believed, the fan diameter is the same between my model and the 964s.

Do I need the housing to go go with the fan or may I install the fan in my SC housing? If I missed an install thread, please don't hesitate to direct me to it. Things like the housing question and whether it physically bolts up to my old stuff, or I need other bits to mate the fan to my stock items.

I'm to worried about the lower airflow. If I need to address cooling, I'll address it thru other means.

Thanks!

Fan noise?! Sometimes i drive with the radio off just so I can listen to the fan.
It's that "typical Porsche sound".
