Do you think there's much frame work to be done?
Hard to get a good tittle without using the word 'frame.' What I really mean is structural work and panel replcement (floor pans, inner rockers, etc.) to 911 tubs. Maybe others.
Here's the deal. I'm thinking of setting my brother-in law up in a small shop with a Celette bench style jig for correcting and repairing Porsche and Mercedes monocoque chassis'. He is about to retire from a 35 year career at an independent shop in So Orange Co, CA, that has been the local recommended facility for Lexus, Mercedes, Porsche and Callilac. The dealers in the local area don't have body shops. So this shop is certified. Of course, he has all the tools and welders, just not the big fixtures. He wants to work a few hours a day after retirement. I would be hesitant to take in any collision work, only restoration. Insurance reasons. Think there's enough in SoCal to support the rent and lights and give a man some work when he wants it? |

Without collisions, how would there be any frame work?

Well, if he's only interested in working a few hours a day, I'm sure there's enough work out there. Heck, I've seen some cars that would take a month at only a few hours a day! Hahaha!
But, I don't think a few hours a day would warrant an additional payment for a lease on a shop, unless it was very cheep. Just my 2 cents.

Hey, Thom, that's funny. But we get some rusty ones. Also, I didn't mean that we couldn't straighten out some wrinkles, just no direct collison repair. That involves insurance companies and all that. This is for collectors and hobbists that do most of the work themselves. Like many of the members here. Thing is, I don't think any of us have a frame rack locally that isn't in a big body shop. You gonna pay big to get your car on one in a big shop.

I think it's a good idea...
After doing a near frame-off restoration of my uni-body Westy, and working in a VW shop (Mesa West German Auto in Costa Mesa) as an "intern", I've seen how difficult rust repair really is if you've got a car you want to do yourself. Mesa West often turns away restoration work like you describe because there's just not a lot of space and time to have cars sitting around.
I think there would be a good market for a business like this in OC. Hell, I might even have some projects for ya. Regards, Jason
