3.6 Update & Install Date!
It’s just about ready! I was tempted to go for it this weekend but decided that an extra week to wrap up any loose ends, and give anyone interested in coming over a little time, would be better.
Saturday, November 29th, 10 AM Anyone who would like to come over and help, watch, or just hang out and drink (German) beer is welcome. Email me for directions. surflvr911sc@aol.com I wanted to wait so I could post some pics but I wanted to get the word out before the weekend. I'll post update pics here latter. Ingo, where are you?? |
Ingo was in Florida yesterday....coming home soon.
|
Cool, thanks Mike.

Update Pictures-
The completed engine.

The first thing I did was remove the terrible short bead welds, that were there to hold the clamp on, and made a solid machined bead that goes around the whole line. There wont be any problem of cutting into the connector hose this way. Also the other lines that I’ve seen that go from the case to the S line have been at an angle, and then they need to connect to the tank’s straight connector. This seems like another bad idea to me so I made a line that the S hose could connect straight to. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1069459801.jpg |
The painted C2 tail.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1069459905.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1069459914.jpg I made an aluminum floorboard to replace the old wood one. New aluminum peddles will happen later. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1069459937.jpg |
Nice job! You want to keep the S hose as high as possible. Its likely you will still want to put an insulating plate between the header and S hose anyway.
|
ahhhhhhhhh that makes AND ruins my day. makes my day cuz it looks badass. ruins my day cuz it ain't in my pcar.
good on ya mate! |
Thanks Guys. Bill, I’ve been thinking about that. I wish I had some extra Ti lying around but I think SS would work well. I’ve been trying to think of the best place to attach them. The valve covers or the engine tin bolts seem like the only good places. As anybody tried Sherwood’s Heat Sheets on a 3.6?
|
Yes, I was one of Sherwood's guinea pigs, here is an early prototype installation
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1069461353.jpg His current offering should go on nicely! You will also likely want a simple shield between the rubber S hose and header. |
Ryan,
Amazing engine detailing. Can you please tell us how you did it? I pulled my engine because I am getting my car repainted, so while it's out, I'd like to clean it up. What did products did you use to get it so clean? |
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/HeatShield2.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/HeatShield1.jpg Side note: high school welds on my re-configured headers have held up fine, while B&B's stainless muffler is slowly splitting apart. |
Side note #2: Ryan, if I had all of those pieces of supercar sitting in my garage, I would not be able to sleep. That's just beautiful.
|
Yeah, I was just looking at it again, I could run Heat Sheets for the valve covers and make a SS shield that attached to the engine tin to put a barrier for the oil line. I’m not using the rubber S hose, I’m sticking w/ the B&B steel line, but I improved the connector beads 200%.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1069462259.jpg Neil, I didn’t do anything real special. I spent a few hours (ok, maybe a couple days) w/ a few different size steel & brass brushes, scotch bright, and rags. I used Castrol (purple stuff) degreaser for the tuff stuff along w/ a lot of water. That stuff can really eat up aluminum so you need to use it sparingly and rinse w/ plenty of water. The really pretty parts were all powder coated; fan, fan housing, valve covers, tin. Everyday it looks dirtier to me and I have to spend a few minutes dusting it off. I know it will get dirty in the car but I would at least like it to be as clean as I can get it when it goes in. Thanks Jack, of course now I have to keep my fingers crossed that my B&B muffler will hold up but hey, the price was right. :) |
Beautiful Job, I bet it's killing you not having it in. How many times a day/night do you walk out in the garage just to check on it!
|
looks great Ryan!
Come the 29th, everyone will be wearing rubber gloves so their hands don't get the engine dirty, instead of vice versa !! ;) max |
Dr. Ryan is my hero.

Man, Ryan, that is beautiful. Did you say you *made* that aluminum floorboard? Just what kind tools do you have at your disposal :)
Hope to make it out there next week. Where is the test drive sign up sheet? -Brad SC motor envy |
yeah, but once it gets in I predict a typical evening will consist of one of the following:
"I'm off to the store" "I'm off to the track" "I'm off to Big Bear, back in a hour or two" "I'm off to Big Sur, back tomorrow" "I'm off to the east coast, back next week" |
Beautiful looking motor Dr., you can eat off that thing.
|
Ryan: Looking good, buddy!
|
So Ryan, are we going to see you at WSIR on 12-03? Wish I could come down and help on the install but a remodel has taken over my life. Ingo will be there I hear so you should be up and running in an hour or two.;)
|
Dan: What is WSIR?
|
Open track racing hosts an event at Willow Streets International Raceway on the 3rd.....

Brad, remember I was on your last test drive, the test drives might have to be “supervised”. ;) One thing is for sure, I need to take it easy on the rebuilt transmission for a little while. Must…have…self…control…! Dan, I don't know if I will make it on the 3rd. I haven't signed up and I don't know if I want to drive it up there and run the cr@p out of it four days after the install, that does sound fun though, I'm torn. I'm getting excited for Saturday! |
Ryan,
Any chance you might have a picture of the back of the motor above showing the fuel injection area? We are not far from putting my 3.6 into the car and are trying to get everything ready to hook up. The back of the motor has two large (25mm or so) black hose outlets. One comes out of the crankcase, goes up about a foot and then does a 90 degree turn and points to the left of the car on the 3.6. There is a second hose that comes out of the fuel injection body that points to the right of the car. Both have large metal nipple to fasten a hose that runs somewhere but I cannot remember seeing anyone mention it before. I assume that one of them goes to the brake vacuum booster but on my 3.2 here was only one, not two of these. What did you do with these? Thanks, Joe A Phoenix |
Whoa!
Ryan:
That is amazing! Beautiful engine! And nice rear wing. I don't know if you have already posted, but maybe you can give a few details on how easy/difficult that rear wing conversion was! Joby |
Joe, in this pic you should be able to see what you are looking for.
The new fabric braided hose coming off of the top of the crankcase goes to the fitting on the oil tank itself. I removed the small S hose that puts that connection at the top/rear of the intake pointing to the driver’s side. The connection out of the crankcase breather is aim perfectly at the oil tank, right where you want it to go. The other line that connects at the top of intake goes to the fitting on the oil tank filler neck. The way this flows is from the crankcase breather to the oil tank, then from the oil tank to the intake. If you want to hook up Cruise Control, you will need to have a T fitting on the brake vacuum line for it. The brake vacuum line connects to the driver’s side of the engine on the same tower that holds the connectors for your left knock sensor, cylinder head temp sensor, and the DME crankshaft position sensor. It’s the line at the top, the fuel return line is at the bottom. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1068573067.jpg Joby, thanks, I'll do that shortly. |
Ryan,
Thanks. I took the cruise control unit off so thats not needed. I will probably go with the setup you have using the long braided hose. Forgot that thats what the early cars had so might as well use proven ideas. The one hose pointing towards the air filter on top is the one I was going to use for vacuum but forgot it goes to the tank and I can pull brake boost vacuum off of it somehow. Thanks and will keep marching forward! Joe |
ryan
very nice. you keep a tidy garage there! and i notice you have some r/c stuff - you fly? just asking 'cause its my "other" hobby. ;) |
Very nice job. It looks like you have done it right!

I did have to replace the connector on my engine b/c it was a different size on the car side. Dickster, yes it's my "other" hobby too. I haven't been out for about a year due to traveling and car projects but I plan to back at after the first of the year. |
Ryan,
Thanks and between you and Ingo just found it. I have Bill Verburgs old motor and he had the vacuum line still running to the tower where the sensors plug into but it had been plugged so I overlooked it. Guess his SC did not have power brakes but I want them hooked up on my car. Will route the oil vent lines same as mentioned above and unplug the vacuum line for my brakes. Thanks! JoeA |
Looks great Ryan. I'm still ill'in, but am going to try and make it up.
|
I think that this is the shot of thar engine that may help best
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1069883828.jpg Mine is an earlier Carrera w/o p/bs |
Bill,
Thanks and good photo of the hoses and connections. Now that we have a picture of "our" motor, which rubber hose is the correct one for brake vacuum and what does the other one do? I would assume that the "bottom one" with the yellow plug on it is for brakes but what about the one just above it? Thx, Joe |
The top one should be for your brakes. I really have no idea what the lower one is for. Harald must have removed it from my engine before he shipped it, which is fine w/ me, one less thing I had to scratch my head over.
|
I don't seem to be able to upload a pic so you'll have to go by my email
Vacuum lines; upper is carbon cannister lower is brake booster |
Interesting, I've never looked that one up. Most conversions I’ve seen have had that removed and the upper one connected to the brake booster. I have a connection on my air filter housing for my charcoal canister.
|
I do not feel so bad now! You guys have forgotten more than I know about 3.6 conversions and we still are not sure.
I may just start the motor the way it is, then see which hose is pulling what and go from there. Joe |
