Sunday project - installing half shafts - 911e

Seems like my car spends more time on jack stands than on the ground. Today we pulled my half-shafts and installed rebuilt units.

The old axles, notice that the boots are toast.

Here is one of the rebuilts axles and the Haynes "instructions"

Actually the hardest part was breaking loose the bolts. Messy job, lots of grease to contend with. I recommend having an assortment of extensions and an air wrench helps break loose the bolts. A torque wrench is used to tighten nuts to specs. Be sure to buy the gaskets too. While not necessary, a new set of bolts and washers was used.

Here's the final product. Hopefully I won't have to do this again for a while.

At least the weather was nice enough to work outside. Now you can go to bed knowing you accomplished something this weekend besides watching football. More than I can say

Of course any time you crawl under the car you find other things to do. While I was in there I replaced the hoses for the heater flapper valves. What I really need to do is to pull them out and paint them. The left side was easy, the right side was tough because of the starter...tight space to work in.

Chuck: What were the symptoms that led you to discovery the half-shafts needed replacing?

Well the boots were toast and the grease was dried out. They were not making any type of strange noise or anything. Bought a set of rebuildable half-shafts and had them rebuilt. Actually I thought the used set I was buying were go to go but they really needed to be dissassembled and repacked with grease and new boots. Otherwise the ones I bought were in good shape.
