My Sc weighs around 2550 with 180 HP. That's a little over 14 lbs. per hp.
If I can strip a boxster down to that weight, even the first year base model would have a ratio of around 12. A later model with more HP would be even better. Add that to a mid engined chassis with a little suspension tweeking and I will be spending lots of time screaming past 911s (some, not all), but they will look still cooler than me (in their minds).
The only thing wrong with a boxster is that Porsche didn't go crazy racing them. If the Boxster had the same identification to racing as the 911 has everyone would think they are the best thing since sliced bread.

How many of the people who put them down have ever even driven one?

Hmm...that does not calculate.

97/98 Boxster 2822lbs/201hp = 14.039

1980 911SC 2550lbs/180hp = 14.166

And just for kicks...

1998 Z3 2.8L 2844lbs/189hp = 15.047

1999 Miata 2299/140hp = 16.421

Soooo nevertheless.......the 97/98 Boxster still comes out 'pretty good'.

1972 911S coupe:
Curb weight 2440
ponies 190
12.84 pounds per pony.
Now I know why I smoked that Boxster...:D

I like anything that's mid engined and stripped naked....

Since we are on this path...

Anyone know how much a 1986 Carrera coupe weighs?

SRISER 11-26-2003 03:57 PM

2700 and change I think...

I leased a Boxster S for 2 years -- it was my technology bubble car. It was fabulous and I'd love to have another one (with about 500 lbs. less wt. and a 300 hp 996 engine).

I ripped thru the rear tires in just about 15,00 miles tho -- that tells something about how much fun it was to corner.

Don't knock it if you hven't driven it.

Oldporsche 11-26-2003 05:20 PM

I think the vote is still out on the boxter.

They seemed to be "totaled" very quickly with out too much damage by the insureance adjusters.

I kind of like the idea to get one and make auto-xer out of it.

I believe that its sort of a reincarnated 914-6. I don't remember those cars being very popular when they first came out. I drove one in Germany in 1970. It was a dog next to the 4dr alfa.

I've tried to watch every race I can when one is entered. The car seems to be overclassed. (whats new?) This seems to be leading to undervelopment of handling packages, etc. By now, if they were competitive, we would be seeing a lot more advertisements for race stuff.

I do however believe that they have all of the natural ingredients to really be road rockets.

You smoked the Boxster because you were a better driver.

My modified SC weighs 2573 lbs, 241hp at the crank, for 10.7 lb/hp.

Road and Track published the lb/hp ratio for my Boxster S as 12.08.

If they are both on street tires, I am faster in the Boxster S despite the fact that I have more seat time in the 911. Don't knock it 'til you drive it.

Joe Bob 11-26-2003 05:28 PM

Couple of years back I went to a PCA sanctioned DE....John Dunkle of Rennlist fame was there.

Anyhow....they had a 986 that was stripped, tubbed and raced very well. Me thinks that a stripped 986 with some power upgrades and a driver that is NOT named Biff will do quite well.

Hetmann 11-26-2003 05:42 PM

I kind of think the "Boxster Image" thing is an association with the initial bunch of owners... the cars as jewelry crowd. By the time I would consider buying one of these things it will evolve into a fun midengine roadster. Don't like the lamps? Buy a body kit. There will be a million of them.

The jewelry crowd will all be driving hydrogen bubble gizmos by then.

Roadsters and convertables are not looked upon kindly by the tech inspectors unless there is a full cage in there. So, it boils down to all out race car or a little DE on SOME, but not all tracks. This is not a first choice, dual purpose car. It's a road going sports car for chrissake. But the way many have talked about it around here, to own one is to have leprosy.

As others have pointed out here, it has it's redemption. Why can't it be just left alone and not the target of constant disparagement?

BTW, mine doesn't have a cupholder and has no place to put one. So put that between your knees. ;)

It's an excellent car. Heck Bruce Anderson owns one. Folks buy cars for different reasons. One of them is to impress others, but that could be said of the 911's (encompassing all models to present), or any car for that matter. It always irked me that VW convertibles (either) the new Beetle, or even some pickup trucks are labeled "chick" cars or trucks. What silliness. You know the power stats, and the handling reviews are excellent. It's a Porsche through and through based in part on one of the early classic Porsches (550). I prefer the nine eleven series myself, but I'd never be ashamed to drive a Boxster, or a new Beetle for that matter. I'm not all that fond of convertibles, but a Boxster can eat crackers in my garage anytime. Some folks will take it on a pony ride, but it will run like a thoroughbred if you so desire. Of course the new Carrera GT would be my first choice.

Hey what's with all the "Bob" bashing at the start of the thread :(

Anyway...life's too short to dis someone about their choice of Porsches....
Yes they did save Porsche,
Yes some people just use they for transportation,
Yes some people even race them,
Yes some people have them just to say they own a Porsche,
Yes they are fine cars

Yes they are Porsches

Joe Bob 11-26-2003 08:09 PM

Would you be happier if I used the psuedonym of Bruce?

Then I would get all the Bruce's on my butt......%^B

I agree with Vanessa.

The Boxter is a much sharper looking car than the current 996 (Evil Japanese Headlight) "911"...

But no way does a Boxter look better than a 993, 911 Carerra, SC, 930 etc.

Cant wait for the 997 to come out.

Found it, if you haven't seen the Oct 2002 Excellence, then you need to check this out, http://www.ridejudge.com/RideDetails.asp?RideID=2687

He bills it as a 2000 Boxster GT3-R, pretty cool, I think!

My First Porsche Ride - a Boxster

I have always drooled when a Porsche - ANY Porsche drove by. Then one Saturday afternoon, my daughter's fiancee's best friend loaned them his Boxster for the weekend, and when they arrived at our door, they tossed me the keys saying "Be home by 10:00 PM Sunday"!! :D

Wifey and I took it out for a "test" drive. It was fast, cornered like a banshee, and I swore that for my next car, I was going to get a boxster.

Then I thought - Hey, why not get a classic like I wanted when I was in college. That would be really  So I started looking, and reading this and the Early 911S BBS. You guys are really helpful, but don't get high falooten!!! A Porsche is a Porsche (except that I still haven't gotten to accept the 914 - That's a Porsche???)

So, I am glad for the Boxster, cause it lead me to get my 73E Targa (coming soon to a driveway near you!!)

Sure it is, it's just that most came with a type IV VW motor (it's still a pancake). With a Porsche six (or the rare flat eight) it's very much a Porsche. What was it Excellence said in it's Boxster vs Z-4 comparison..."Just as it was thirty years ago, the best roadster is the one with two trunks."

It oughta spank ass, it's got a 996 engine conversion. (this would be where the 996 flaming begins... )

I personally like the Boxter, 996, 356, 911, and heck even the 914!! All would be welcome in my driveway.

G-forces pulled on 300 ft diameter skidpad, as published by Car & Driver:

Ferrari Enzo ($659K) 1.05g
Dodge Viper SRT-4 ($85K) 1.00g
Lamborghini Murcielago ($284K) 0.98g
PORSCHE BOXSTER ($51K) 0.93g
Porsche 996 Turbo ($119K) 0.93g
Ferrari Maranello ($248K) 0.92g
Everyone else < 0.92g

Any questions?

yellow911turbo 11-27-2003 06:04 AM

i read through all 4 pages and did not see a post by nostatic. i was looking forward to something funny.

my $0.02: i may be one of the oldest "active" memebers on this board without a porsche. right now it would be difficult to own one being stationed overseas but i'm always on the lookout. to be honest, i never considered a boxster but i wouldn't turn one down given the "right price." the right price is very very cheap. i'd say 10k. ;) the price for the cheapest 986 is the same as a mid-priced 964. to me that's a no-brainer. then again, what do i know?! i've enver owned a porsche.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU ALL!! God bless you all.

cheers,
serge

p.s. i'm finally home... the holidays. hooray N.C.

I kinda know how you Boxster guys feel. I've been driving one of Porsches other bastard children for years.

Yup. It wouldn't look right if the less expensive member of the family was THE hot ticket, although most of us would still want a nine-eleven or newer version of same, too.

DANNOV 11-27-2003 06:06 PM

I have owned various 911's since 1977. It is a great car, but I drove a 2003 Boxster S in August and my 1985 Carrera is now gone. The Boxster is probably the finest handling production car under $150,000+. The new Lotus Elise is probably an exception to that claim but the Lotus is more racing car than road car. Look at the Road & Track 800 foot slalom test. The Boxster S hits 71.6 mph through the slalom course. The only faster production car is the Ferrari Enzo at 73.0 mph and $650K. The 2001 911 GT2 hits 68.7 mph and the 2001 911 Turbo is at 67.8 mph. The Saleen S7 is at 70.6 mph and the ZO6 is at 67.2 mph. The one proper gripe about the Boxster is that it has no racing heritage like the 911. The Boxster will probably never gain that kind of status but it is one fine handling automobile. Unfortunately the factory will probably never give it enough HP to match the new 911 in acceleration and top end speed. If they add any horses it will cost a lot more $. I wasn't too crazy about paying an additional $10K for the 33 hp of the Boxster S over the normal version, i.e. $300 per additional pony. I'm not taking any swipes here about the 911's but we should recognize that the Boxster is probably here to stay and is not likely to have the shorter life span of the 924, 944, or 928. It is just too good of a car dismiss lightly.

And I am a freak on any Porsche new or old. Now if only everyone would stop bashing each other on what type of Porsche they drive and realise that everyone has their own taste and be happy that atleast they drive or have a Porsche not a Buick. Right.:)

naparsei 11-28-2003 05:36 AM

My 250 stock hp doesn't seem too retro. This car has much more power than my 3.0L 911 did, or my 2.5L 911 did. The fun factor even exceeds that of my 1600N 356! I know I can drive faster in the Box than any 911 I've ever owned. They are both great (and different) cars; I am in the market for another longhood 911, but wouldn't do it at the expense of my Boxster. It's just too fun to drive (isn't that what it is about?). About Boxster and 964s being the same price -> that is true, but I liked the feel of the Boxster better when I drove it, and instead of getting a 10 year old 911 (you know what that means), I also got 2.5 years of factory warranty, with nearly the same HP, and better handling (plus I wanted a convertible, and prefer 911 coupe styling to the cabrios).
