Any input on 1976 930s?
I'm considering a 1976 930 and I was just looking to get some opinions about the car from you guys. What are some things to look for and consider? Also how expensive is adding an Intercooler to one of these?

IMO, go for the best you can buy. You are going to put in the same amount of $$$ to maintain either it's 76 or 89. If you add a little here and there, the price will be close to the newer one quickly. The performance of a 76 930 is about comparable for a 87-89 Carrera but with higher maintainence cost.

I would go for the '78 and later, you get the 3.3 engine with intercooler and better brakes, and buy the best you can afford and get PPI.
If you are planning to buy a stock model and add modifications, i.e turbo, exhaust, headers, cams etc, buy one that has these mods already done. It will save you money in the long run. If you get the "boost bug" it can get expensive very quickly.

Fitting intercooler to a 3.0L engine isn't that hard, the hard thing is to make the pipes between the trottle an the IC, the angle will be sharp.
I made it to my 930 '77, but as soon i attached the IC the car wont start, i looked after airleaks tested every single part of it but never find the problem.. "maybe it was just my car.. i heard others that just put an IC on and drive.." The airbox must be remowed also, i fitted an new one with a open-air filter. /Jocke

It's also worth mentioning that the early 930's had 6:1 compression as opposed to the later models with 7:1. What does that mean, it means that after fitting an intercooler where 1 bar may be pushing the limits of the other 930, 1 bar in the early one would be the equivalent compression of .8 bar (stock) as the later car.

It had 6.5:1 opposed to 7:0 ... very low C/R any way you look.

Go for it!! If you go much newer you will have a 911 turbo not a true 930 turbo carrera. I just had to bring that up. The intercooler would be nice but it does have some weight to it. If you want the rush and the car that they came out with the term "turbo lag" for, then go for it. Car and Driver's road test was 0 to 60 in 4.9 sec. they had to abuse the car but it did do it. If you need a copy I have it.

All great info on the turbo. I was looking to do the same as yourself. I ended up with an 82' 930 (obviously gray market). The previous leads are right on about the brakes. In 78 or 79 they went to the cross drilled brakes from the 917. A huge difference, as the earlier 76 and 77 editions were under braked. The only reason I would go with a 76 or 77 is if you are looking for an authentic example and leave it stock. The 78's and later are a much better value, due to the intercooler and brakes. Trust me, you will get the hp bug no matter what you buy. You mine as well start with the better package (ie. 3.3 litre, brakes, intercooler). The best example I found was an unmolested stock car. Has plenty of power to get you in a lot of trouble. Be careful of cars that have already had the mods done (abuse). I would much rather do the mods myself. Much funner that way!
JC930, I would love a copy of that article. Are you talking about the version that was in Excellence was Expected? Send me a PM. If I knew how to post pictures, I would show off my car. Take Care and good luck. |
